Freya Leach, a rising star at Sky News, is leaving the channel just four months after her show was cancelled.
Freya announced on Thursday’s episode of The Late Debate that she is pursuing new opportunities.
‘A little bit of personal news from me this evening. After a lot of thought, I’ve decided to finish up on The Late Debate,’ she said on air.
I’ve really enjoyed working on this show with all of you these past twelve months, performing four nights a week, and I’m going to miss it a lot.
Freya explained that with some new opportunities appearing, she wanted to explore them. However, she assured them she’d stay on for another couple of weeks.
The commentator rounded out her announcement by thanking Sky viewers for their patronage.
She expressed her gratitude to the viewers, saying, “You’re the reason this job is so rewarding, and we really appreciate your companionship.”
Host Caleb Bond joked that there were no pastures greener than those at The Late Debate.
‘How can you say there was a better job than working with us?’ Caleb joked.
‘It’s sad to see you go, but I’m sure you will excel at whatever you try your hand at.’
Panellist Liz Storer was also full of praise for Freya.
She told me she’s really enjoyed working with me, even though it’s only been temporary, and that she’s confident I have a bright future.
Freya posted the announcement on Instagram, and her friends and coworkers quickly responded with lots of supportive messages.
James Macpherson, a colleague at Sky News, shared a message saying he’s really enjoyed working with Freya and will miss her. He also expressed excitement for Freya and her husband, Cooper, and their future endeavors.
One fan wrote, ‘You’ve been amazing on Sky, and we know you’ll do great things in the future! We’ll miss you.’
Many people shared similar feelings, with one writing: ‘Oh Freya – So sorry to hear this! We wish you all the best in the future and will definitely be supporting you in your next endeavors!’
Freya’s departure comes after her debate show Freya Fires Up was scuttled back in September.
The show only ran for six weeks, and faced problems after a guest made offensive comments about Muslims on September 21st.
After looking into how the show was made, Sky News first changed ‘Freya Fires Up’ from being broadcast live to being pre-recorded.
However, the network eventually took it a step further, scrapping the program altogether.
Sky News Australia conducted a full internal review, acted on its findings, and addressed the situation with those involved, a spokesperson told Daily Mail.
The program has been cancelled, but Freya Leach will continue as a co-host on The Late Debate.
Freya is widely considered a promising talent at Sky News, and many senior colleagues believe she has a very successful career ahead of her.
