We initially believed the competition to buy Warner Bros. was finished when Netflix made a successful offer and Warner Bros. agreed to be acquired. However, Paramount hasn’t given up. They’ve now launched both a takeover attempt and a lawsuit in an effort to win the studio.
Variety reports that Paramount Skydance has sued Warner Bros. in Delaware, requesting they reveal the financial reasoning behind their agreement with Netflix for $83 billion. This legal action follows Warner Bros.’s rejection of Paramount’s offer to buy the entire Warner Bros. Discovery company for $30 per share.
Paramount Wants Warner Bros. To Disclose Why It Chose Netflix
Over the past few months, Paramount has repeatedly tried to buy Warner Bros., making eight offers that have all been turned down. While Paramount’s offers have included more money per share than Netflix’s, Warner Bros. believes the deal with Paramount is riskier, making the Netflix offer more appealing despite the lower price.
The lawsuit claims Warner Bros. Discovery (WB) should reveal how it makes decisions. The plaintiffs believe that if shareholders knew all the details, they might prefer a deal with Paramount instead.
The news that Netflix won the bid for Warner Bros. came as a surprise to many in the film industry. People immediately started to question what this would mean for how Warner Bros. movies are shown in cinemas. Netflix has openly said it wants movies to be available in theaters for a shorter time before being released elsewhere, but they’ve also stated that Warner Bros. films will continue to play in theaters for now.
The Battle For warner Bros. Appears Far From Over
If Netflix acquired a major film studio, it would be a streaming service taking direct control. However, a deal involving Paramount would combine two of the biggest studios, reducing competition. When Disney bought Fox, we already lost one independent studio, and a merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. would continue this trend, potentially leading to fewer movies being released in theaters.
The proposed deal between Netflix and Warner Bros. is controversial within the film industry, and both options for Warner Bros. have pros and cons. While Netflix and Warner Bros. claim an agreement is in place, Paramount disputes this. Regardless of the lawsuit’s outcome, Paramount is determined to continue fighting the deal, and with a potential merger years away, this conflict could drag on for quite some time.
