A new documentary about the making of Season 5 has upset some fans who disliked the series’ ending. Reports that the final season wasn’t fully written before filming started have been confirmed by the documentary, adding to their frustration.
Although fans were hoping for a ninth episode of Season 5, they’re getting a behind-the-scenes look at how the final chapters of Stranger Things were made. This includes interviews with the actors and crew during filming. In one segment, Key Set Production Assistant Montana Maniscalo talks about filming the finale, and she says:
Today’s shoot for Episode 8 is a bit unusual – the script isn’t finished! We’re still figuring out the details, so things are a little unpredictable.
‘Stranger Things’s Finale Caused So Much Backlash
The first part of Stranger Things Season 5 initially suggested a strong finish to the series. Though many viewers felt the ending was satisfying and well-executed, a significant number of fans have expressed strong disagreement and disappointment.
The days following the release of the final episode of the show on New Year’s Eve were filled with controversy. Fans shared petitions claiming significant footage was cut, and there were accusations that Netflix influenced the removal of storylines involving beloved characters. Many also expressed disappointment with how the main villain, the Mind Flayer, was ultimately portrayed. Although the creators, the Duffer brothers, tried to address the concerns immediately, it didn’t calm things down, as Matt Duffer later explained on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
I regret doing those interviews after the event. I’m really not feeling well right now, and honestly, I don’t know why we even did them yesterday. I’m completely exhausted – I was already recovering from the flu. If anyone is upset with anything we said, please be understanding.
Even though past rumors and conspiracy theories have been debunked, the release of this new Netflix documentary is almost certain to reignite demands for a revised ending to Season 5. Fans will likely push for a complete overhaul, much like they did with the final season of Game of Thrones. While a reshoot is highly unlikely, that won’t stop fans from loudly voicing their opinions on social media.
