As Avengers: Doomsday Brings Back Steve Rogers, I Have A Sam Wilson-Related Concern

Though Avengers: Doomsday isn’t out until later this year, Marvel Studios has already started promoting it with short trailers shown in theaters and then online. The first trailer confirmed long-standing rumors: Chris Evans will be returning as Steve Rogers. While fans are excited about Captain America’s return, I’m also worried about what this means for Sam Wilson’s future as the hero.

Why I’m Worried About Sam Wilson Amid Steve Rogers’ Imminent Return

At the end of the 2019 film Avengers: Endgame, Steve Rogers, now older, passed his shield to Sam Wilson, naming him the new Captain America. Wilson fully took on this role in the 2021 series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and continued as Captain America in last year’s Captain America: Brave New World. While Marvel Studios made it clear Sam was the new Captain America, recent developments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have put him in a somewhat uncertain position.

Everyone’s talking about Steve’s return, and I’m worried it could mean Sam will have a smaller role. The preview showed Steve still has his Captain America suit, suggesting he’ll be fighting again. Sam will likely be suiting up too, but what happens when both of them want to be Captain America?

There’s talk Steve Rogers might have a significant part in the upcoming Doomsday film, and it seems plausible given how he’s been featured so far. Although I’m already unsure about bringing Steve back, I definitely don’t want Sam Wilson’s story to suffer because of Rogers’ return. It’s also concerning that Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige admitted Brave New World didn’t do as well as hoped, largely because it was the first Captain America movie without Chris Evans.

Why I’m Still Trying To Remain Optimistic About Sam’s Role In Doomsday

Let me just add two quick thoughts. First, I’m a huge Steve Rogers fan – though I’m still a little unsure about bringing him back, honestly. Second, I’m trying to stay optimistic! I really think Sam Wilson is going to get a meaty storyline. The Russo brothers, Joe and Anthony, are just fantastic with big casts – you can see it in some of the best Marvel films they’ve directed, and that gives me hope.

Details about the upcoming Doomsday movie are mostly secret, but we know it will feature a battle between the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Doctor Doom. Meanwhile, after the events of Brave New World, Sam Wilson is determined to reunite Earth’s heroes. Interestingly, a post-credits scene in Thunderbolts shows he’s also taking legal action against the New Avengers, claiming trademark infringement.

While Sam seems poised to be a key player in this new movie, Steve’s return complicates things a little. I’m hoping Sam will still have the chance to prove himself as a strong leader, especially considering his past experiences and growth. It feels like the logical next step for his character.

The new movie, Avengers: Doomsday, will be in theaters on December 18th as part of the 2026 film lineup. While you wait, you can enjoy previous Marvel Cinematic Universe films and series by subscribing to Disney+.
