Okay, so I just got the scoop on the next Star Wars film, and it sounds like they’re going back to what made the original trilogy so compelling – a central father-son dynamic. It’s called Starfighter, and while we’re getting The Mandalorian & Grogu in theaters soon, this one’s already in the can! Director Shawn Levy, who brought us Deadpool & Wolverine, is at the helm, and it’s slated for a May 2027 release. Ryan Gosling, fresh off Barbie, will be leading the charge alongside newcomer Flynn Gray, and they’re apparently on the run from some serious baddies across the galaxy. Amy Adams, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, and Aaron Pierre are also along for the ride in this story set after The Rise of Skywalker.
Director Shawn Levy, who is making a new Star Wars film scheduled for May 2027, recently told The New York Times that the story will center on a father-son relationship. While the characters haven’t been named yet, most fans believe this connection will be between the characters played by Flynn Gray and Ryan Gosling.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I really loved how Starfighter brought that classic father-son dynamic to the forefront. It’s something we’ve seen throughout the entire Skywalker saga – from the original movies to the prequels and sequels – with so many stories revolving around characters dealing with imperfect or missing fathers. It felt really central to the whole Star Wars feel!
This central idea led to the most famous moment in Star Wars: Darth Vader revealing to Luke Skywalker in The Empire Strikes Back, “I am your father.” This shocking declaration paved the way for Vader’s eventual redemption in Return of the Jedi.
This idea wasn’t as strongly emphasized in the earlier films. However, it’s possible to suggest that Anakin Skywalker’s lack of a father figure made him vulnerable to Darth Sidious, who took advantage of his need for a father and ultimately led him to the dark side.
In the sequel trilogy, The Force Awakens establishes that Han Solo wasn’t a very good father to his son, Ben Solo. This poor parenting contributed to Ben’s transformation into Kylo Ren, and ultimately led to him killing Han on Starkiller Base – a pivotal moment that cemented his turn to the dark side.
Director Shawn Levy frequently explores the bond between fathers and sons in his films. This theme appears in varying ways throughout his work, including in movies like Real Steel, The Adam Project, Night at the Museum, and now Starfighter.
During the same interview, Shawn Levy shared a surprising detail: Tom Cruise had a special involvement in making last year’s Starfighter.
Star Wars: Starfighter’s Father-Son Dynamic May Be a Little More Complex

Okay, so the buzz is that Ryan Gosling isn’t actually playing a father in this new film, despite what you might have heard. He’s more of an uncle figure, stepping in to protect his nephew from a couple of villains. Honestly, the kid’s dad is a bit of a mystery – we don’t even know if he’s around. But the really interesting part? Amy Adams, who you probably know from Man of Steel, is rumored to be playing the boy’s Jedi mother. It’s a really cool casting choice, and I’m eager to see how that plays out.
With the young Force-sensitive character lacking a father, Ryan Gosling’s character might take on a protective, fatherly role in the Star Wars universe. Some fans believe Gosling is even mentoring his character’s nephew, potentially preparing him to become a more suitable teacher of the Force.
If the potential new apprentice to Starfighter doesn’t have a father, he’d share a similarity with both Anakin and Luke Skywalker, as Luke was raised by his uncle after his father was absent.
While Ryan Gosling’s character might not have a family in the movie, it seems he will be joined by his real-life wife, Eva Mendes. Mendes, who stepped away from acting eleven years ago, is rumored to be returning to the screen to play Gosling’s wife in the film.
