The upcoming Spider-Man 4 seems poised to deliver on a story idea first hinted at for Andrew Garfield’s cancelled Amazing Spider-Man 3, thanks to groundwork laid by Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. Throughout his time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Holland’s Spider-Man has faced a wide range of villains, even including iconic foes from the previous Spider-Man films starring Garfield and Tobey Maguire. Now, Spider-Man 4 will finally explore a storyline that hasn’t been seen on screen before.
Concept artist Tom Zhao recently revealed designs for a version of the Scorpion character that was planned for Sony’s unreleased The Amazing Spider-Man 3. Created by Oscorp, the suit would have featured large, insect-like eyes on the mask, claw-like hands, and a huge scorpion tail that could shoot flames.

As a big Spider-Man fan, I found it fascinating to read what director Marc Webb shared about his plans for the Sinister Six! Apparently, the design for Scorpion in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was actually meant to subtly tease the team’s future appearance. He had this cool idea for Scorpion being a kind of military experiment – a defense system designed to take down projectiles. He envisioned the character’s tail as a super-fast laser targeting system, able to destroy anything coming at him. It’s a shame those plans didn’t fully come to fruition, but it’s neat to see the thought that went into the character’s design.
I joined the production of ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ at an early stage to help develop subtle clues about the Sinister Six, which would be foreshadowed in the movie.
Here are a few concepts for the prototypes in Oscorp’s Special Projects Division.
Scorpion
I initially envisioned a personal defense system against incoming projectiles, like a miniature ‘Iron Dome’. The core idea is a fast-targeting laser – essentially a ‘tail’ – that would intercept and destroy threats before they reach the user.

In The Amazing Spider-Man 2, we briefly saw a Scorpion suit at the Ravencroft Institute, along with designs for other villain tech like Doctor Octopus, Vulture, and Rhino. The movie hinted at Scorpion becoming a major villain, potentially as part of the Sinister Six, but those plans didn’t come to fruition. Now, Spider-Man 4 is finally bringing that idea to life with Michael Mando reprising his role as Mac Gargan.
Tom Holland returns as Spider-Man in the fourth solo movie featuring the character within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Titled Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the film is part of Phase 6 of Marvel Studios’ plans and also stars Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Michael Mando, Jon Bernthal, and Mark Ruffalo. The story follows Peter Parker as he tries to start a new, private life while dealing with emerging dangers. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled for release on July 31, 2026.
Scorpion’s Role in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Scorpion is likely to be a major villain in the upcoming Spider-Man 4. The movie will continue his story from Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), where he was imprisoned and scheming with Vulture to defeat Spider-Man.
Everything suggests that Mando will become the Scorpion in the upcoming Brand New Day storyline, though his costume hasn’t been revealed yet. While Spider-Man will face other villains in this movie, Mando’s transformation into his evil side will be a major highlight for fans.
A key point of interest is how Mac Gargan, as Scorpion, will interact with the other villains in the movie, including Tombstone, Tarantula, Boomerang, and potentially others. It’s expected they’ll all share scenes together.
With anticipation building for the upcoming sequel – potentially releasing before the end of 2025 – Scorpion is expected to be a major focus, as Mando plans to significantly develop Mac Gargan’s storyline within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
