Primate And Greenland 2 Prove Light Competition For Avatar: Fire And Ash At The Weekend Box Office

The first weekend of 2026 was easy for James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire And Ash, which continued to dominate the box office thanks to strong holiday releases and a lack of new competition. This past weekend, however, brought new challenges with the release of Johannes Roberts’ Primate and Ric Roman Waugh’s Greenland 2: Migration. Despite the new contenders, Avatar: Fire And Ash still managed to stay on top.

The new movies caused some changes in the weekend’s top-grossing films, but Avatar 3 is still number one and looks to be one of the biggest hits of 2025. Here’s the complete Top 10 list, and I’ll share some thoughts on the results after.

Avatar: Fire And Ash Rules The Box Office Again As It Continues Its Trek Toward $2 Billion Globally

Last Sunday, Avatar: Fire And Ash officially surpassed $1 billion worldwide, becoming only the 59th film ever to reach that milestone. While it’s still uncertain if it will join previous Avatar movies and reach $2 billion, recent box office numbers are definitely moving it closer to that impressive target.

This past weekend, Avatar: Fire and Ash earned an estimated $21.3 million domestically, a 49% decrease from the previous week. This brings the film’s total domestic earnings to $342.6 million. Importantly, Avatar has now surpassed Wicked: For Good in overall 2025 box office revenue, even though Wicked is still playing in over 1,100 theaters and continues to earn money.

Avatar 3 is now among the top 5 highest-grossing movies in the US and Canada last year. It currently trails only A Minecraft Movie ($424.1 million), Lilo & Stitch ($423.8 million), Zootopia 2 ($378.8 million and still increasing), and Superman ($354.2 million). It’s likely to finish in the top 3 by the end of its theatrical run.

The film has now earned $342.6 million domestically, bringing its total worldwide earnings to $1.23 billion when combined with the $888 million earned internationally. This makes it the 27th highest-grossing movie of all time (without adjusting for inflation), surpassing the $1.215 billion earned by Iron Man 3 in 2013.

The numbers show that the Avatar films have always earned more money internationally than in the U.S., and overseas audiences will decide if this latest installment becomes one of only eight movies ever to gross over $2 billion. However, this new James Cameron film isn’t performing as strongly in the U.S. and Canada as previous ones. While it’s still very profitable and ensures future films will be made, it’s losing momentum much quicker than Avatar: The Way of Water did in 2022 and 2023.

Just 24 days after its release, the second Avatar movie had already earned $517.6 million – significantly more than the first Avatar made in the same timeframe. It will be interesting to see how the numbers continue to grow throughout January and February.

Primate Scares Up Enough For Second Place, But It May Fizzle Fast

So, let’s look ahead to movies coming out in 2026. While we’re still waiting for a film to surpass Avatar: Fire And Ash at the box office, Primate had a strong weekend and landed in second place.

While an $11.3 million opening weekend wouldn’t be impressive for a large-scale blockbuster, the new creature feature Primate benefits from its relatively low production cost. According to Variety, the film only cost $21 million to make, meaning it’s already on track to become profitable and doesn’t need to earn a huge amount more to do so.

It’s still uncertain whether the movie will maintain its momentum and reach its projected box office goals. While critics generally enjoyed Primate, praising its self-aware, low-budget style and satisfying violence, audience reaction seems less enthusiastic—as shown by its “B-” grade from CinemaScore. Unless more people start recommending it, the film could see a significant drop in ticket sales next weekend.

Greenland 2: Migration Falls Short Of Den Of Thieves Money In Its Opening Weekend

Unlike Primate, which managed a moderate performance, Greenland 2: Migration had a disappointing opening weekend, landing in fifth place at the box office. The first Greenland movie was originally intended for theaters in 2020 but was released via video-on-demand due to the pandemic. Despite this, it did well enough to warrant a sequel. However, audiences didn’t seem very interested in seeing the second installment in cinemas.

Gerard Butler has starred in successful January releases before, like the Den of Thieves movies and Plane. However, his newest film, Greenland 2, hasn’t done as well. It only earned $8.5 million domestically in its opening weekend, which is less than his previous hits that all made over $10 million. With a reported production cost of $90 million (according to Deadline), Greenland 2 is currently projected to be the first major box office flop of 2026.

Next week, the box office is expected to see changes with the release of Nia DaCosta’s 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple and the broader release of Gus Van Sant’s Dead Man’s Wire. Check back with TopMob next Sunday for my full report and analysis of how these films perform.
