For the past few years, Miles Morales has become recognized as a hero beyond just being Spider-Man within the Marvel universe. If this continues in the new movie, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, it could create problems. Ever since Miles Morales first appeared in Marvel comics in 2011, he’s been known primarily as Spider-Man.
Miles Morales first appeared as a Spider-Man in a different universe, but he’s become a popular hero in his own right, starring in projects like the Spider-Verse movies and the Spider-Man games on PlayStation. Recently, however, some Marvel stories have started referring to him by a new name.
The popular Disney+ show, Spidey and His Amazing Friends, is coming back this January and has a unique twist: it calls Peter Parker ‘Spidey,’ Miles Morales ‘Spin,’ and Gwen Stacy ‘Ghosty.’ This helps young viewers easily tell the three Spider-People apart.

For a while, the ‘Spin’ superhero names were only used in the Spidey and His Amazing Friends series and didn’t appear in other versions of the Miles Morales character. However, last November, a new comic book officially recognized the ‘Spin’ name within the established comic book storyline.
Some fans are concerned that the “Spin” name might also be used when Miles Morales returns in the upcoming movie, Beyond the Spider-Verse, which is scheduled for release on June 18, 2027.
Why Miles’ Spin Name in Spider-Verse 3 Could Be a Big Mistake

As a huge fan of the Spider-Verse movies, I’m really worried about including the ‘Spin’ name for Miles Morales. I honestly think it could mess up the whole movie and even go against what makes these films so special and beloved by everyone. It just doesn’t feel right!
The core idea behind the Spider-Verse movies is that anyone can be Spider-Man. This is shown by featuring many different Spider-People from various realities, but especially through the story of Miles Morales, a young Black teenager from Brooklyn, who becomes Spider-Man in his own world.
The heart of the first two Spider-Verse movies has been Miles Morales coming to terms with becoming Spider-Man.
Changing Miles’ superhero name to Spin in the third movie would be a mistake. It would undermine the unique identity this version of the character has established, especially considering recent changes in other Marvel projects.
This isn’t just about Spider-Man’s branding. Changing the hero’s name undermines the core idea that anyone could be Spider-Man. It emphasizes that the power comes from the person, not the identity, and that anyone, from any background, can step into that role.
If Marvel wants to rename the hero ‘Spin’ after Beyond the Spider-Verse, that’s okay. However, they should hold off on major changes to the character for now, allowing the popular Spider-Verse movies to complete their planned story and Miles Morales’ character development.
Gwen Stacy, often called Spider-Woman or Spider-Gwen, is officially known as Ghost-Spider in Marvel comics, and it’s possible that ‘Spin’ will eventually become a nickname like hers.
Following the events of Spider-Verse, Miles Morales earned his own distinct Spider-Man nickname, keeping his connection to the Spider-Man legacy alive.
