New Blade Rumor Claims The Reboot Is ‘Dead,’ But There May Still Be Some Good News For Mahershala Ali’s Vampire Hunter

I remember being so excited when Mahershala Ali was announced to play Blade at Comic-Con in 2019! It felt like a huge moment. But honestly, after six and a half years, all we’ve gotten is a quick voice appearance in Eternals. The Blade movie has faced so many delays, and now I’m hearing rumors it might be canceled altogether. I’m still hoping it happens, though – I really want to see Mahershala Ali as the Daywalker!

Let’s start with the concerning news. Jeff Sneider, co-host of The Hot Mic podcast, recently reported that the upcoming Blade movie may have been canceled. This is particularly disheartening considering the success of the original Blade trilogy starring Wesley Snipes from 1998 to 2004. It seemed like Marvel Studios could easily integrate a vampire-hunting Blade into their existing cinematic universe.

Here’s some potentially good news: we might still see Blade appear in a Marvel movie. According to Jeff Sneider, Blade will now be introduced in a film featuring the Midnight Sons team, though details are still scarce. If this report is true, it’s a letdown that Marvel Studios isn’t moving forward with the originally planned solo Blade movie – especially the version set in the 1920s that many fans were excited about – but it means the character isn’t being dropped altogether.

The Midnight Sons were first created by Howard Mackie, Andy Kubert, and Bobbie Chase, and debuted in full in 1992’s Ghost Rider #31. The original team included Blade, Morbius, and both Johnny Blaze and Danny Ketch as Ghost Rider. Over time, the Midnight Sons have generally featured Marvel’s supernatural and often darker heroes, such as Wolverine, Doctor Strange, Magik, Iron Fist, Man-Thing, Moon Knight, Scarlet Witch, and Werewolf by Night, to name a few.

Aside from appearing in the video game Marvel’s Midnight Suns (with a slightly different title), the team hasn’t been the focus of any major projects. While the game received good reviews when it came out in 2022, it didn’t sell very well. This potential Midnight Sons/Suns movie would likely be the team’s biggest introduction to a wider audience, and Mahershala Ali would play Blade as part of a larger group, rather than the main character. I think that would work well, especially if it allowed him to team up with existing Marvel Cinematic Universe characters like Ghost Rider (specifically the Robbie Reyes version), Moon Knight, and Man-Thing.

Until Marvel officially confirms the fate of the Blade movie or announces Midnight Sons, it’s best to be skeptical of any rumors. What we do know for sure is that Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday are the next confirmed Marvel Cinematic Universe films, scheduled for release on July 31st and December 18th, 2026, respectively.
