Roger Ewing dead at 83: Gunsmoke actor played deputy marshal Thad Greenwood on the iconic Western drama

Roger Ewing, best known for his role as Deputy Marshal Thad Greenwood in the classic TV show Gunsmoke, has passed away at the age of 83.

The actor’s family announced in an obituary that he passed away on December 18.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Patrick Ewing first appeared on a Western television series in February 1965, when he was 23 years old.

He first appeared as Ben Lukens, but he later returned to the show as Greenwood and stayed for 50 episodes, with his final appearance in September 1967.

Ewing started performing while still in high school, appearing in a comedic show that parodied the TV western Gunsmoke, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

He spent a year in college and worked as a lifeguard before deciding to pursue a career in acting.

The Los Angeles-born star passed away less than one month before his January 12 birthday.

His onscreen debut came in 1964, an uncredited role in the film Ensign Pulver.

The same year, his height – 6’4″ – helped him land a part on Bewitched, playing a college basketball player who was a monster.

He also made appearances on popular TV shows like The Baileys of Balboa and The Bing Crosby Show during this period.

In 1965, the actor starred in two projects: the anti-war film None But the Brave, directed by Frank Sinatra, and the TV series Rawhide, where he played the character Billy Wallace.

Ewing additionally made a 1967 guest appearance on the TV series Mothers-in-Law.

I was amazed to learn that in 1969, Patrick Ewing actually went on The Dating Game! Apparently, he was trying to win a date with the beautiful actress Lindsay Wagner. It’s wild to think about him on a show like that!

His final television job was on Death Valley Days in 1970.

His ultimate film roles were in Smith! in 1969 and Play It as It Lays in 1972.

Ewing, who never married or had kids, later turned to a career in photography.

As a photographer he traveled to Europe, the South Pacific, Mexico, and Russia, per THR.

The report also mentioned his involvement in local politics, noting that he ran for a city council position in Morro Bay back in 2003.
