Leonardo DiCaprio’s “masterpiece” sets impressive new record as it becomes awards favourite

Paul Thomas Anderson’s film, One Battle After Another, has made history by receiving the most nominations ever on a BAFTA longlist.

The dark comedy features Leonardo DiCaprio, Teyana Taylor, and Chase Infiniti, and is inspired by Thomas Pynchon’s 1990 novel, Vineland.

The movie has been highly praised by critics and is already a major contender during awards season. It recently earned 16 nominations for the BAFTA awards, including top categories like Best Film, Director, and Leading Actor. The official list of nominees will be revealed on January 27th, with the awards ceremony taking place on February 22nd.

Written and adapted for the screen by Anderson, One Battle After Another features Leonardo DiCaprio as Pat Calhoun, a former revolutionary forced to emerge from witness protection when a corrupt military officer begins pursuing him and his daughter, Charlene (who also goes by Willa), played by Infiniti.

Anderson’s newest film, which came out last September, features Taylor playing Charlene’s mother and the iconic Perfidia Beverly Hills. The cast also includes Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, Regina Hall, Alana Haim, Wood Harris, Paul Grimstad, Tony Goldwyn, and Jena Malone.

The film has received overwhelmingly positive reviews, earning a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes based on over 400 critic reviews. IndieWire called it a “blisteringly hilarious dad-core masterpiece,” and it’s also up for eight awards at tomorrow’s Golden Globes ceremony (January 11th).

The film One Battle After Another has received several Golden Globe nominations, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Director, and Best Screenplay. Leonardo DiCaprio, Infiniti, Taylor, del Toro, and Penn have also been nominated for their performances.

During an interview last October while promoting the film, Anderson shared that they altered the ending at the last moment, resulting in a more impactful conclusion.

Anderson believes the final version is a significant improvement, noting he initially expected a more elaborate conclusion involving Pat and Willa’s hug (according to Rolling Stone).

We were really excited to create a moment for Willa where she could finally be in control – where she could take charge, be proactive, and have the upper hand.

Next, we need to figure out the action – who attacks whom, and how it happens. Someone has to do the deed, and then escape!
