Overwatch 2’s story is evolving, and we’re starting to see hints of what’s coming next. The game currently has five empty slots suggesting new story content is on the way. Here’s a rundown of what’s been revealed so far.
Since its debut in 2016, the world of Overwatch has been steadily building a rich backstory and character stories, and that continued with the release of Overwatch 2 in 2023. Over the years, heroes like Ramattra, Lifeweaver, Illari, and others have been introduced with their own unique narratives. Recently, the game has started hinting at five new story additions. Here’s what we know so far, along with insights from Overwatch 2 game director Aaron Keller about where the game’s lore is headed.
Overwatch 2 teases new stories and lore
The game currently has five empty spaces labeled “Coming Soon” appearing right after the “A New Empire” comic by Vendetta. These indicate content that will be added later.
Similar to the comics leading up to Vendetta, those appearing before it are also presented chronologically. This hints that the comics following Vendetta might reveal what happens next in the Overwatch 2 story.
The Overwatch 2 story so far
The recent Overwatch 2 comic, “A New Empire,” showed that Vendetta came from a powerful family – her father, Antonio Bartalotti, was a member of Talon. But Blackwatch killed her father, and Talon took what should have been her inheritance. This led Vendetta to become a gladiator in the Colosseo, where she gained wealth and built connections. Eventually, she used her influence to infiltrate high society and began plotting against Talon’s leaders.
The “Reconciliation” comic showed Ramattra, the leader of Null Sector, reconnecting with Zenyatta. Shortly after, Sojourn’s report, called “Breaking News,” revealed that Null Sector’s troops were falling back.
Overwatch 2’s story also includes videos introducing Wuyang and Freja, two characters who became playable heroes before the ‘Vendetta’ release.
What’s next for Overwatch 2’s lore and story?
Overwatch 2 game director Aaron Keller recently spoke with Xpsp about how the game’s story will unfold. The conversation focused on the character Vendetta and her connections to key groups within the Overwatch world, like Blackwatch and Talon.
Although the team doesn’t intend to bring back the Retribution mission in the near future, they enjoyed how players connected it to the Vendetta mission. They want to keep building on the game’s existing story, introducing new heroes and using them to develop the lore in interesting ways.
We aren’t planning to revisit the Retribution event or anything similar in the game for now. However, I also really enjoyed the reference to that mission, as it ties into the Vendetta storyline. I’m particularly excited about how connected this new hero is to the game’s overall story and characters – not just her father, but also the Blackwatch heroes who participated in that mission, as Keller explained.
He explained that the character is now deeply linked to the rest of the Talon organization. He felt it was exciting to create a hero with such strong connections, and acknowledged Jude’s significant contribution to the process. Looking ahead, he hopes they can continue this approach with future heroes – building connections to the game’s world, existing story, and even using new characters to expand the lore in interesting ways.
