Be warned, this contains spoilers for the first episode of The Pitt season 2! Noah Wyle and John Wells, a star and the director of The Pitt, have hinted at how the relationship between Langdon and Robby will develop over the course of their 15-hour shift. Season 2 picks up several months after the events of season 1, where Robby pushed Langdon to seek help for his drug addiction. Their relationship has been strained ever since, and they haven’t been able to fix things.
In an interview with Variety, actor Robby Wyle discussed the strained relationship between his character and Langdon in the season 2 premiere of The Pitt. He hinted that while it won’t be a quick fix, the show might lay the groundwork for them to start rebuilding trust, even though their relationship is currently very fragile.
To truly move forward and find peace, they need to have an honest conversation. Fifteen hours isn’t much time to resolve something significant or completely change someone’s mind. It’s only enough time to begin a process – to start exploring feelings and ideas, whether those are positive, negative, or difficult. It’s about taking small steps towards understanding, and those steps can lead to big changes over time.
The director of the first episode, Wells, said Langdon hopes Robby will finally talk about his difficulties, which Wells feels would justify the entire program. However, they’re also grappling with the challenges Robby’s absence created due to his past actions, and the fact that Robby previously held him to a very high standard before discovering the truth.
Langdon believes he’s made a significant effort, even though it was a challenging process with personal costs, including potential career setbacks and strain on his family. While he doesn’t expect praise, he hopes others will recognize the difficulty of what he went through. However, some, like his former protégé Robby, felt let down and had to pick up the slack during his absence. This situation highlights the complex realities of recovery – it’s hard work, and acceptance isn’t guaranteed. It’s important to show that recovery isn’t always easy, and not everyone will understand or support the journey.
In season one, episode ten, Langdon was asked to leave the hospital after Robby discovered he was taking Louie’s medication. Later, after Langdon returned to help those injured in the Pittfest shooting at the end of the season, the main character insisted he enter a recovery program. This caused a falling out between the two doctors, who were once close friends.

The second season of The Pitt began with Langdon trying to have an honest conversation with Robby, hoping to resolve their issues before Robby’s temporary leave. They haven’t made up yet, as the doctor is currently preoccupied with other matters. However, it looks like they will eventually talk things through.
At the end of the recent episode, Robby is helping doctors with many different patients throughout the hospital. Meanwhile, Langdon is appropriately taking care of Louie, who has a toothache and some other worrying health issues. Even though they’re currently working in different parts of the hospital, it’s clear they’ll eventually team up again, no matter how much work there is.
Langdon’s apology to Robby feels like just the first step in a long process. His time away has put a real strain on everyone else, and even The Pitt has recognized that. Honestly, he’s got a lot of making up to do with a lot of people. As Wyle pointed out, this could be a turning point for Langdon, a chance for him to really rethink how he handles things from now on.
New episodes of The Pitt season 2 arrive Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO Max.
