Disney is talking with Kathryn Hahn about her potentially playing Mother Gothel in the live-action remake of Tangled.
I was so excited to hear that they were finally getting back to work on the live-action Tangled movie in October 2025! It’s fascinating to learn about the casting process, and I read that Scarlett Johansson was originally in the running to play Mother Gothel. Sadly, it didn’t work out because of her commitments to The Batman II and the new Exorcist film – it’s a shame, but I understand how schedules can clash!
In the 2010 animated film, Gothel is the villain. She kidnapped Rapunzel because Rapunzel’s mother had eaten a flower that maintained her youth while pregnant. After losing access to this source of eternal youth, Gothel stole the baby Rapunzel, intending to use the princess’s magical hair to stay young herself.
