Returning near-perfect BBC thriller gets first look and new cast announcement – with Broadchurch star

The BBC has given fans a sneak peek at the upcoming third season of the thriller series The Capture, which is set to return this year with a notable cast.

The series, which first aired in 2019, features Holliday Grainger as Rachel Carey, a talented detective who initially holds the rank of Detective Inspector (DI) and is later promoted to Detective Chief Inspector (DCI). She investigates crimes involving deepfakes.

Paapa Essiedu, known for his role in I May Destroy You, will reprise his character Isaac Turner MP. He first played the part in season 2, which aired in 2022, where his character came under investigation by Carey due to potential connections with a Chinese tech firm.

The pair has returned to dismantle Correction, a program used by the UK intelligence service to manipulate videos.

Season 3 begins twelve months after Carey revealed Correction’s deceptive practices with a live deepfake. The season opens with an investigation into how the program was used illegally.

Carey, now the Acting Commander of Counter Terrorism Command, hopes to rebuild public confidence in surveillance technology with the launch of the new Operation Veritas camera system.

However, a shocking terrorist attack directly targeting key British institutions creates a major and deeply damaging setback.

Carey’s investigation focuses on a single witness, and quickly becomes entangled in a larger international crisis involving powerful figures in government, intelligence agencies, and the press.

New photos from the upcoming season of The Capture reveal Carey will be working alongside Khadija Khan, a presenter from Newsnight, who is portrayed by Indira Varma, known for her role in Game of Thrones.

Ben Miles, Ron Perlman, Tessa Wong, Ginny Holder, and Nigel Lindsay will all reprise their roles in the third installment. Miles returns as Commander Danny Hart, Perlman as CIA agent Frank Napier, Wong as DC Chloe Tan, Holder as DI Nadia Latif, and Lindsay as DCI Tom Kendricks.

Carey’s half-sister, Abigail, will be back in season three, with Daisy Waterstone reprising her role.

Recently released photos offered fans their first glimpse of the new cast, including Hugh Quarshie, who joins Ashley Grainger and Paapa Essiedu in the upcoming season.

The Star Wars actor is set to play new character, Commissioner Cameron Yates.

This season features Quarshie alongside actors known from popular shows like Broadchurch (Andrew Buchan), Game of Thrones (Joe Dempsie), Kaos (Killian Scott), and Good Omens (Jonathan Aris).
