Abbott Elementary Season 5 Brought Back A Forgotten Plot Twist

The show Abbott Elementary hinted at a major storyline back in season four, but it wasn’t until the ninth episode of season five that it finally revisited Gregory’s hidden second job. Even though Abbott Elementary doesn’t feature any Thanksgiving episodes, it still successfully balances the feel of a heartwarming family show with a realistic workplace comedy.

The actors in Abbott Elementary have a close, family-like bond – from playful teasing between Melissa and Jacob to Barbara Howard’s guidance of Janine. This makes it especially impactful when one of them goes through a difficult time, as seen in season four when Gregory shared that he was working two extra jobs to make ends meet.

Jacob Mentioned Gregory’s Second Job In Abbott Elementary Season 5, Episode 9

In season 4, episode 16, “Books,” Gregory had to take on two extra jobs – delivering packages and driving for a rideshare service – because his teaching salary wasn’t enough to cover his expenses. This financial struggle was revisited in the following episode, “Karaoke,” where Gregory was dangerously close to missing the staff karaoke night due to being constantly overworked.

Although Gregory was incredibly stressed juggling two extra jobs in season 4, these jobs weren’t really discussed in season 5. For instance, when he first met Janine’s mother, Vanetta, in the season 5 episode “Birthday,” no one mentioned his side jobs during their conversation.

Luckily, the show finally acknowledged this overlooked detail in season 5, episode 9, “Mall.” While the teachers were turning an abandoned mall into a makeshift school, a school district official mentioned that student lunches would be delivered. Jacob pointed out that Gregory already works as a delivery driver, jokingly implying he could handle the job.

What seemed like a quick, funny line from Jacob is actually important to Janine’s story arc in the fifth season of Abbott Elementary. Gregory working so much could be a reason for him and Janine to move in together and split expenses, but this storyline will only make sense if the show reminds viewers that he has multiple jobs.

As a huge fan of Abbott Elementary, I was really hoping they’d address what was happening with Gregory. When he started driving for rideshares and doing deliveries on top of his full-time teaching job, it seemed like way too much for him, and Janine even pointed that out! But honestly, the show just kind of… dropped it. In the latest episode, “Mall,” it felt like they were pretending he wasn’t still juggling all three jobs, which was a little frustrating to see. I was hoping for some resolution there!

As a huge fan of Abbott Elementary, I’m really excited about where season 5 is headed! Now that Gregory’s got his second job back, it makes perfect sense for him and Janine to finally move in together – it’s a smart way to address his financial situation and also feels totally natural for their relationship. It’s clever writing, honestly – the show managed to use that plot point to serve two purposes at once, which is always fun to see.
