TV shows rarely stay enjoyable years after they first air. Unlike movies, they often feel dated because of special effects that don’t look good anymore, references people have forgotten, or overused storylines. Most shows are lucky if they’re just considered ‘okay’ when revisited – the worst outcome is that they feel completely outdated.
It’s unusual for a TV show to get better over time, but a few have managed it – shows like Twin Peaks or maybe Fringe. However, one mystery thriller that started in 2013, with just 12 episodes in total, is a true standout. It’s improved remarkably over the last thirteen years, and each time you watch it, it’s even more enjoyable.
What Utopia Was About

The show Utopia starts off looking like a fun, comic book-inspired series. It follows four fans of a popular graphic novel who meet in real life to talk about a rumored lost sequel. But their search quickly uncovers a dangerous conspiracy within the British government, and they find themselves on the run from deadly killers and powerful enemies. Their only hope for survival lies in finding a woman named Jessica Hyde.
As the story of Utopia unfolds, the characters adjust to their new lives, moving the plot forward as they each take a stand in a conflict that could completely change the world. The series explores complex themes of genetic science and the challenges facing humanity as resources become scarce, but it does so in a particularly unsettling way.
Utopia Feels Like It Was Made More Recently Than 2013

Utopia delves into the intense splits within politics and society. The story features dishonest leaders, widespread disease, and numerous scandals and secret plots. These issues have always existed, but over the last ten years, the world has become noticeably more divided, fueled by growing political extremism and heated cultural debates.
It’s amazing how relevant Utopia still is, considering it was written before 2016. When it first came out, it felt like a realistic warning disguised as fiction. But with the world becoming increasingly chaotic and shocking events happening regularly, Utopia feels even more pointed and insightful now than it did thirteen years ago. While Black Mirror is often praised for its dark predictions, Utopia is just as perceptive.
Despite being a bit dark, Utopia feels like a show made for today’s streaming services. It was visually stunning, hard to categorize, and incredibly ambitious, but when it originally aired in 2013, it felt out of place. Now, it would fit perfectly on any major platform, proving just how forward-thinking the series was.
There Hasn’t Been Anything Like Utopia Since

Although Utopia felt like a modern streaming series, nothing has really matched it since it aired in 2013, either in the UK or the US. Many conspiracy-themed shows have come and gone, and numerous series try to shock with violence or edginess. However, Utopia was special because it uniquely combined strange, complex storytelling with a strong, uncompromising attitude – it refused to follow any conventions.
With its unique blend of British wit, shocking violence, and a complex, unpredictable plot, Utopia created a truly original identity. Years later, no other show has managed to capture – or even attempt – its distinctive style.
A US remake of the show in 2020 fell flat, actually emphasizing just how good the original was. The remake lost the unique atmosphere and qualities that made the UK version successful, and it failed to capture what made Utopia special. It was cancelled after just one season, demonstrating that even a new version couldn’t compare to the original Utopia.
