Even though it finished a few years ago, the series Dark on Netflix seems to improve over time, especially considering how inconsistent sci-fi TV currently is. As we look ahead to 2026, sci-fi television is in an interesting spot. Shows like Foundation and Silo are truly exceptional, and Netflix’s Love, Death & Robots consistently delivers creative and exciting episodes.
Since The Expanse finished, no other sci-fi show has quite captured the same audience. A big reason for this is that many new sci-fi series are cut short before they have a chance to really develop. That’s why Dark on Netflix feels so special and appreciated right now.
Dark Is Aging Well

The sci-fi mystery series Dark centers around the disappearance of a child and the investigation that follows, involving a large group of characters. While it shares some similarities with Stranger Things, don’t let that deter you. Dark, a German production, boasts a more intricate and ultimately, more unsettling, time travel narrative.
Dark skillfully combined its intriguing time travel story with the lives and relationships of its characters in a small town. The show’s complex plot was cleverly constructed – it was challenging without being confusing, a rare feat for science fiction.
Sci-Fi Shows With Proper Endings Are Becoming Rare

One of the best things about Dark is that it had a clear beginning, middle, and end. Unlike many promising sci-fi shows that get canceled too soon, Dark always had a planned three-season arc, and it stuck to it. This meant the final episode felt satisfying and complete, instead of hurried or unclear.
As Stranger Things became increasingly fantastical with each season, Dark distinguished itself by centering its science fiction around time travel. Rather than introducing a variety of supernatural elements like monsters, mind control, and telekinesis, Dark chose to deeply explore a single concept: time travel, making its more unbelievable aspects feel surprisingly realistic.
Is Dark The Best Time Travel Show Ever Made?

Movies have explored time travel in many ways, ranging from the scientifically complex, like Primer, to lighthearted comedies such as Hot Tub Time Machine. But when it comes to TV shows, Dark might be the most compelling example of this sci-fi idea.
With a large cast of characters, the show explored time travel through many different viewpoints at once. Because the story had a planned conclusion, it avoided the fate of shows like Outer Range, which showed early promise but were cut short. Ultimately, Dark was a hidden Netflix treasure that still deserves to be watched and appreciated, even years after it finished airing.
