The upcoming Star Wars film, currently titled Star Wars: Starfighter, will draw inspiration from the storytelling style of Stranger Things, specifically its use of collaborative world-building, according to director Shawn Levy. Levy is directing the new Star Wars movie, which stars Ryan Gosling and Matt Smith, and also directs and produces Stranger Things, which recently concluded its hugely successful final season.
The director recently shared that his new film, Starfighter, was surprisingly influenced by Stranger Things. Similar to the popular Netflix show, the upcoming Star Wars movie will combine large-scale action with strong relationships between its characters.
Shawn Levy, reflecting on his experience with Stranger Things, shared that it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the pressure of meeting fans’ expectations for a large franchise. However, he emphasized that focusing on those expectations can actually lead you astray, as he told The Hollywood Reporter.

“I’ve learned the need to stay rooted in character, and themes and relationships on screen.

Okay, so it definitely has that epic, big-budget feel you get from shows like Stranger Things. And honestly, working on this project, especially with Star Wars and Starfighter elements, the scope and adventure are unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. But just like Stranger Things, it’s not just about the spectacle. It’s really focused on the characters and their personal stories, keeping things grounded and relatable, even with all the crazy stuff happening.
Levy explained that his goal is to create a fresh and exciting Star Wars film that captures the same balance between grand spectacle and personal stories that the creators of Stranger Things achieved. He believes this approach will deliver a truly satisfying experience for both longtime fans and new viewers.
The director helmed episode six of Stranger Things season five, titled ‘Escape from Camazotz,’ which revealed key details about the backstory of Henry Creel, also known as Vecna. He also co-directed episode seven, ‘The Bridge,’ alongside the creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers.

So, I’m really excited about this new movie, Starfighter! It’s directed by Levy and the script is by Jonathan Tropper. It takes place five years after The Rise of Skywalker, which is cool, and the cast is awesome – Flynn Gray, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and even Amy Adams are all in it!
Levy will be back working with the Duffer Brothers on the already planned live-action Stranger Things spin-off series.
The director enthusiastically confirmed his continued involvement, saying, “We’ve become like brothers over the past ten years. My future is tied to the show – if Stranger Things continues, so will I.”
In addition to an animated Stranger Things series with the original characters (but a different voice cast), a live-action spinoff is planned. According to Matt Duffer in The Hollywood Reporter, this spinoff will explore a “new mythology” while also providing answers to questions about Henry’s past.
Star Wars: Starfighter is scheduled to be released in cinemas on 28 May 2027.
