The historical drama Alone in Berlin, featuring Emma Thompson and Brendan Gleeson, is now available on a new streaming service in the UK. The film, directed by Vincent Perez, tells the story of Otto and Anna Quangel, a German couple who quietly oppose the Nazis after their son is killed in World War II.
This movie is adapted from Hans Fallada’s 1947 novel, Every Man Dies Alone. The story is based on the courageous true story of Otto and Elise Hampel, a couple who bravely resisted the Nazi regime in Berlin.
Set in Berlin in 1940, this story follows a working-class couple struggling to survive under the Nazi regime. When their only child is killed in action, their grief leads them to take a bold and unexpected stand against the government.

The historical drama Alone in Berlin is now available to stream on Prime Video in the UK, making it accessible to subscribers.

When the movie came out in 2017, reviews were mixed. It received a 58% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 57 reviews. While critics liked the acting, they felt the story wasn’t very complex.
Both lead actors deliver outstanding performances. Daniel Brühl adds a memorable appearance as a police investigator who wants to be compassionate but is forced to be harsh, according to a review in The Financial Times.
Okay, so I just read a review in The Guardian, and they said the acting was really solid – especially from Gleeson, Thompson, and Brühl. They also said the movie itself was really well-made and put together nicely. Basically, it sounds like a polished experience!

According to Empire Magazine, the film Alone In Berlin, similar to The Book Thief, doesn’t quite reach the emotional intensity or boldness needed to be truly memorable.
According to The Observer, the talented actors overcome any shortcomings in the production with powerful and honest performances.
Okay, so Slant Magazine basically said the movie was trying to be subtly sad and dramatic, but it just ended up feeling boring and like nothing much was happening. It didn’t really hit me emotionally at all, honestly.
Alone in Berlin is streaming now on Prime Video.
