Morning Live presenter forced to halt show recording as his wife rings to announce she has gone into labour

Xand van Tulleken, a presenter on Morning Live, revealed his wife called him during the live broadcast to tell him she was going into labor.

Dr. Chris Smith, a general practitioner and health expert who appears on BBC daytime television, was recording an episode of his podcast, ‘What’s Up Docs,’ with his brother, Christoffer, when he learned the news.

While they were talking, his phone rang, and he quickly apologized, explaining he needed to answer it.

Dolly mentioned she believed labor was beginning. She described feeling period-like cramps – not constant, but happening at regular intervals – that reminded her of the early stages of labor with their son, Rex.

She continued: ‘So I think it would be good if you came home.’

Since Xand is a doctor, he calmly explained to his wife over the phone that she was experiencing contractions that came and went.

He told his brother, “Chris, we’re over 41 weeks now, and Dolly is experiencing what seems like period cramps,” but his brother cut him off.

Christoffer joked: ‘Why are you still speaking? I think you’ve gotta leave!’

Xand then got up and left the studio to be at his wife’s side for the birth of his third child.

In a continuation of the video, Xand shared that he rushed home from the studio and arrived in time for the birth of his daughter, Daphne. Dolly went into labor, and Daphne was born at their home at 10:30 PM that night.

She and her mother are doing wonderfully! She’s just perfect, and look at her tiny feet – they’re absolutely adorable! Newborn baby feet are the sweetest, aren’t they?

Although the video was just uploaded on Saturday, Xand’s wife, Dolly, had previously announced their daughter’s birth on December 5th. She shared that the baby was born on November 27, 2025.

Dolly announced the birth of her daughter, Daphne Rita Adora van Tulleken, who was born at home on November 27th, 2025, at 10:30 PM. She shared that Daphne arrived between the fireplace and the Christmas tree, which they had decorated the night before!

I’m so grateful for the wonderful and incredibly helpful midwives who looked after me! They safely transported me to the hospital for placental removal and then back home, where we could finally enjoy precious newborn cuddles and introduce Daphne to her big brother, Rex!

In 2024, Xand and Dolly welcomed a son together, Rex Patrick Anthony van Hoogenhouck-Tulleken.

Xand has a son named Julian from a previous relationship. Julian lives in Canada with his mother.

The doctor and his wife got married last May, and the happy couple shared a smiling photo with BBC Morning Live.

We’re sending huge congratulations to @avantulleken and @dolitics, who tied the knot in London yesterday! ❤️ Everyone on the Morning Live team wishes them all the best! Feel free to leave a message for the newlyweds!

Dr Xand is already a father to his son Julian who lives in Canada with his mum.

In a 2021 article for The Guardian, he described his son as the most important and wonderful thing in his life.

He really came as a surprise. I briefly dated his mother, and we remained friendly when we went our separate ways.

I received a completely unexpected call one day from her, while she was working in North Korea. She told me she was pregnant. At the time, I was living in England and she was living in Canada.

For the first decade of his son’s life, Dr. Xand lived in North America. Then, he and his family moved back to London.
