The fifth season of Stranger Things has sparked a lot of debate among fans. While the first part, released on November 26, 2025, was widely enjoyed, the second part (released on Christmas Day) and the series finale (released on New Year’s Eve) proved to be quite controversial. Many viewers feel the season suffered from uneven pacing, partly due to a large number of characters and a greater emphasis on new faces rather than the original group.
The last four episodes were a bit uneven, but the series ending is sure to spark conversation for a long time. Thankfully, the finale does defeat Vecna, and includes a truly impactful quote – one of the best ever from a Netflix series.
Vecna’s Death was Five Seasons in the Making
Season 4 of the show really threw me for a loop with the introduction of Vecna, this supposedly all-powerful, evil wizard. What’s fascinating is how the season slowly unveils his backstory, revealing he’s been manipulating events from the shadows. But here’s the kicker: Vecna isn’t exactly forthcoming with the truth, making him a seriously unreliable source. It got a lot of us viewers questioning everything – was he really the mastermind behind the Mind Flayer all along, or was he just a puppet himself? The show brilliantly leaves you wondering who was actually in control.
Vecna has been the source of all the trouble in Hawkins for years. He’s responsible for everything, from Will’s initial disappearance and the horrors he faced, to the brutal events of Season 4. Every main character has been deeply affected by Vecna’s actions. While it was inevitable the series would end with his defeat, making that ending truly satisfying was a difficult task.
To be honest, the climactic battle felt a little rushed. Vecna and the Mind Flayer didn’t offer the intense resistance many viewers anticipated, and there were surprisingly few of the creatures – like Demogorgons and Demobats – that we’ve come to associate with the Upside Down. The final setting, the Abyss, was a strangely empty, desert-like planet, lacking the familiar vines and monsters that have been central to the show for nine seasons.
Many viewers felt the final battle wasn’t as satisfying as it could have been, and that’s understandable. Vecna had become increasingly strong throughout Season 4. While the plan to attack both the Mind Flayer and Vecna simultaneously, using their shared connection, was clever, the execution felt surprisingly simple.
A highlight of the battle is when Will and Eleven work together to defeat Vecna. Eleven enters the Mind Flayer to fight Vecna from the inside, while the others battle the creature externally. During this, Will briefly connects with Vecna’s mind and breaks his arm, creating an opening for Eleven to finally destroy him by stabbing him with a spike within the Mind Flayer’s body.
It was incredibly rewarding to watch Will and Eleven – the two characters most deeply affected by Vecna – finally defeat him. They earned the right to deliver the final blow more than anyone, though it wasn’t actually them who ultimately destroyed him. While the fight leading up to his demise might have surprised some viewers, Vecna’s final defeat was perfectly executed.
Joyce Delivers the Final Blow & an Iconic Line With It
Okay, so the big showdown happens – Eleven finally manages to skewer Vecna, and with the Mind Flayer collapsing, everyone rushes inside to get out. It looks like that’s it for Vecna; his body is left hanging on that awful spike, seemingly lifeless. I mean, it was a direct hit to the chest, right where the heart would be. He’s completely still, utterly silent…and honestly, as a viewer, I really thought we’d seen the last of him. It felt conclusive.
He began to choke on his own blood, bringing everything to a halt as everyone realized he was still alive. Confused, most people simply stood and stared, unable to comprehend how he could still be alive despite appearing to be dying. They watched in stunned disbelief.
Holding an axe, Joyce bravely confronts the monster who kidnapped her son and haunted her family for years. Despite her fear, she remains remarkably calm. Before attacking, she delivers a powerful six-word message, making it clear Vecna’s downfall was caused by his own overconfidence: “You messed with the wrong family.”
Joyce delivers the famous line and then powerfully swings the axe at Vecna, as her friends look on. Each strike brings forth a flood of painful memories for everyone – flashes of Will’s abduction in the first season, Mike’s heartbreak when Eleven disappeared, Jonathan’s fear for Will’s life when he was infected by the Mind Flayer, and more.
This final confrontation with Vecna is fitting, as it powerfully shows the extent of the pain he’s inflicted. Each person involved has either lost someone they loved or came dangerously close to death because of him. Though Vecna’s defeat won’t erase the lasting trauma they’ve experienced, it does finally deliver the justice they deserve.
Joyce relentlessly attacks Vecna until she decapitates him, finally defeating him. It feels fitting that she delivered the final blow, as Vecna has caused her so much pain. Ever since Will disappeared in Season 1, viewers have followed Joyce, a determined mother tirelessly searching for and protecting her son. It was essential that she be the one to end his threat for good.
While Vecna’s defeat doesn’t erase the trauma everyone experienced, it does signal a turning point, allowing them to start healing. Joyce’s words about family extend beyond just the Byers – the core group, including Will, Jonathan, Mike, Nancy, Steve, and Robin, have become a true family through everything they’ve endured. They survived an incredibly difficult journey by supporting each other, and that shared strength is a fitting and powerful conclusion to their story.
