Matthew Macfadyen’s “engaging” spy drama based on “absurd” true story is a must-see on TV tonight

Don’t miss Operation Mincemeat tonight on TV! This captivating spy story, featuring Matthew Macfadyen and Colin Firth, is based on incredible true events and boasts a fantastic British cast – it’s a real treat.

The 2021 movie is based on Ben Macintyre’s 2010 book of the same name and tells the story of Charles Cholmondeley and Ewen Montagu, two intelligence officers who worked together during World War II. The actors in the film play these roles.

To gain an advantage in the war, Charles and Ewen created a clever deception. Their plan was to mislead Germany and hide the true location of the Allied invasion, which was actually aimed at Sicily.

Tonight at 9pm, BBC Two will broadcast Operation Mincemeat, a film directed by John Madden and written by Michelle Ashford. It will also become available to stream on BBC iPlayer shortly after it airs.

The spy drama boasts a stellar cast, featuring Kelly Macdonald, Penelope Wilton, Johnny Flynn, Jason Isaacs, Mark Bonnar, Mark Gatiss, Simon Russell Beale, alongside Macfadyen and Firth.

Despite not being a huge box office success, Operation Mincemeat received very positive reviews from critics. Currently, 83% of critics on Rotten Tomatoes have given the film a positive rating, based on 115 reviews.

RogerEbert.com praised the story as consistently engaging due to its absurdity, surprising twists, and dry wit. The Times described it as a lively and cheerful experience.

According to The Age Australia, Operation Mincemeat is a delightful surprise and evokes a sense of nostalgia for a time when entertainment was carefully and skillfully made.

The Hollywood Reporter also commended the film, noting that despite its somewhat rough title, it’s a sophisticated and well-acted production that skillfully blends suspense with heartfelt emotion.

I was reading a review of ‘Spiffing Pluck’ and The Financial Times said it really captured the feel of those classic British war films made right around 1945 – you know, before they started making them more like a business and less about that genuine, heartwarming spirit. It totally makes sense – it feels like one of those old movies!

Operation Mincemeat airs at 9pm on BBC Two before streaming on BBC iPlayer.
