US pop star left shocked by Aussie audience at Beyond The Valley festival

US pop star JoJo has been left pleasantly surprised by Australian fans.

The 35-year-old former child star recently performed at the Beyond The Valley festival in Victoria, sharing the stage with artists like Dom Dolla, Kid Cudi, and Addison Rae.

It appears the creator of ‘Get Out’ really likes a particular accessory often seen at Australian festivals.

A concert attendee shared a video on TikTok of JoJo pausing between songs to speak to the audience.

The video showed many people in the audience holding up decorated poles, often called ‘doof sticks,’ which displayed signs or funny memes.

These glow sticks come from the Australian ‘bush doof’ scene and are commonly used to help people find each other in crowded spaces.

The camera swept over the crowd, revealing a collection of creatively decorated signs – some shaped like Smurfs, others like Pepsi bottles, and even umbrellas.

Speaking to the crowd, JoJo admitted she had never seen such a thing before.

‘I’ve never played a festival where I’ve seen these sticks – these are amazing,’ she said.

JoJo playfully compared a Shrek-themed stick – which showed Shrek in a bikini – to herself, noting a funny similarity.

‘I feel like this is me. I feel like this busty Shrek stick,’ she laughed.

Joanna Levesque, known as JoJo, made history as the youngest singer to reach number one on the US Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart, achieving this at only 13 years old.

The singer continued to create popular music, releasing two more albums that set her up for major success. Her second album, The High Road, included the hit song “Too Little Too Late,” which reached the top five on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Her promising career stalled after a seven-year legal battle with her record label, Blackground Records, which she joined when she was just 12 years old.

Oh my god, it was awful watching it all unfold! Our girl, the singer of ‘Too Little Too Late,’ basically said her record label was holding her hostage! She couldn’t get out of her contract and they wouldn’t let her release any new music – like, commercially, for everyone to hear. It was heartbreaking, honestly. She felt completely trapped!

The feud led to her fans taking up a #FreeJoJo campaign on social media at the time.

As a lifestyle expert, I always tell people to fight for what they believe in, and JoJo definitely did! After a long legal battle, she finally won in 2013, freeing her from her old contract. It was such a turning point, and she quickly signed with Atlantic Records in January 2014 – a fantastic new beginning for her career!

In 2017, JoJo revealed she was still dealing with the fallout from her previous record label issues. She tweeted that they had taken her music down and she had no power to change it, but expressed hope that they would eventually restore it.

That year, the singer shared that she had used alcohol to cope with difficult times and struggles with her self-esteem.

The singer recently shared with Entertainment Tonight that they’ve gone through some really tough times. They admitted to wondering if they could recover, feeling like too much time had gone by.

I was going through a really tough time and turned to alcohol to escape my thoughts. I’m being honest, I just wanted to feel better and numb the pain, but it was clear I was trying to cope with deeper issues.

In 2020, she shared that Taylor Swift had been a source of support while she was dealing with issues from her previous record label.

‘A few years ago, Taylor had me over her house, actually,’ JoJo told People magazine.

Honestly, a friend of mine was completely floored by everything I was dealing with. She just kept saying how unfair and awful the whole situation was – she was really expressing how upset she was for me, and it meant a lot.

She never could have predicted she’d experience the same thing – having her work acquired by someone else.
