FKA Twigs revealed in the February issue of ELLE UK that she’s survived difficult and traumatic experiences in her life.
The 37-year-old singer has been busy promoting her latest albums, Eusexua and Eusexua Afterglow. In a recent interview, she discussed how she’s grown more assertive, admitting she used to be naive in her twenties.
After a nearly four-year legal battle, FKA Twigs reached a settlement with her former partner, Shia LaBeouf, resolving a lawsuit where she accused him of domestic abuse.
While working on a playful photoshoot for the magazine, FKA Twigs explained that she’s come to appreciate all parts of her life, both the good and the bad.
She mentioned she’s at a point in her life where she can reflect on the past and appreciate both the wonderful and the difficult experiences she’s had.
I’m learning that I can embrace both the joy and the pain in life – the beauty and the hardship, the love and the sadness. It feels empowering to be able to hold all these contrasting feelings at once.

She explained that as her career progressed, she became more confident in voicing her opinions. She shared, ‘I’ve always aimed to feel both youthful and vibrant while also being intelligent – something I wasn’t always able to achieve in my twenties.’
As someone who’s spent years observing and sharing life’s journeys, I was really struck by Twigs’ honesty. She opened up about the challenges she faced growing up as a woman of colour, explaining that she was raised in a community where she was often the minority. It’s a powerful reminder of how our backgrounds shape who we are, and how important it is to share those experiences.
She shared that she feels fortunate to have been born into a unique identity – as a woman, a person of color, and an artist. She sees these aspects of herself as incredibly meaningful.
It’s strange to hold onto feelings based on how others treat you, especially when it’s hard to know if their behavior was actually unfair.
We didn’t have language to describe subtle, everyday acts of discrimination back then. The attitude was, if it wasn’t overt racism like using a racial slur, it wasn’t seen as a problem.
Twigs has revealed she continues to feel unsafe, even after reaching a legal settlement in her domestic abuse case against her former partner, Shia LaBeouf.
Court records show that the British singer, Tahliah Debrett Barnett, has asked to drop her lawsuit against Shia LaBeouf, 39, for good, preventing her from filing it again.
I’ve been following this case closely, and it’s heartbreaking. Back in 2020, a lawsuit was filed claiming serious abuse during a relationship – specifically, allegations of sexual battery, assault, and the emotional trauma that followed. The person filing the suit was asking for $10 million in damages to cover the harm they experienced.
Honestly, safety isn’t something I take for granted. It’s why I’m so dedicated to supporting organizations like Sistah Space and No More – I really want to do everything I can to help those who’ve experienced trauma and offer them a path towards healing. It’s deeply important to me to be involved and give back in any way possible.

She told The Hollywood Reporter that she’s focusing on the future and moving forward with her life, rather than dwelling on the past.
Oh my gosh, can you believe it? FKA Twigs and Shia LaBeouf actually met while making his movie, ‘Honey Boy’! She was in it, you know, and that’s how it all started! It’s just…everything makes so much more sense now, knowing they connected on set. I was obsessed with ‘Honey Boy’ anyway, but now it’s, like, a sacred text! They found each other making art, it’s so beautiful!
When Twigs and LaBeouf reached a settlement, lawyers for both sides stated that the issue had been resolved through a private agreement.
They announced they’ve reached an agreement to settle the case outside of court and are dedicated to moving forward in a positive way.
Although the specific terms of the agreement aren’t being disclosed, we both hope for happiness and success in our personal lives and careers, and wish each other peace moving forward.
In her initial lawsuit, Twigs made several troubling accusations against LaBeouf, including claims that he knowingly infected her with an STD and once threatened to drive his car off the road with her as a passenger.
She also alleged he physically assaulted her at a gas station following that incident.
LaBeouf had denied many of the allegations against him.
The February issue of ELLE UK is on sale from January 2nd.
