Claire Foy recently described balancing her career with raising children as incredibly challenging, using surprisingly frank language in a new interview.
The 41-year-old actress from The Crown has a 10-year-old daughter, Ivy, with her former husband, Stephen Campbell Moore. The couple separated in 2018.
She admitted that balancing work and motherhood in the entertainment world often feels like simply hoping everything works out.
Claire, featured on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar UK’s February issue, was honest about the challenges of balancing work and family. She said, ‘It’s really tough to juggle a job and be a parent – it’s a complete mess sometimes, if I’m being real.’
Let me tell you, working in film and TV is amazing, but it definitely presents challenges when you’re trying to build a family life. The hours are long and unpredictable, so it’s a constant balancing act – a lot of creative scheduling, relying on a strong support system, and honestly, a little bit of luck to make it all work!
Claire also spoke about ageism in the entertainment industry now that she has entered her 40s.

She believes the industry often doesn’t know how to support or utilize women in the 45-60 age range.
‘They’re like, who are you? You’re not a mother. Are you a mother? Or are you a grandmother? I
I believe it’s important to portray women I admire and connect with – women who are real and exist in the world. And I’ll continue to do that whenever I can.
During the interview, Claire also talked about social media and explained why she prefers to stay out of public debates.
She shared that her beliefs, identity, and opinions are always evolving, just like everyone else’s. She emphasized that she can only really speak to her own experiences as an actress, and shouldn’t be seen as an authority on other subjects.
I generally prefer to stay quiet unless I have something meaningful to say. If I’m just adding to the noise without a purpose, it’s best for me to remain silent.
She expressed a strong dislike for social media, saying she truly hates it.
We need technology to improve our lives, not make them significantly worse, and right now, I don’t see that happening.

It feels odd watching life unfold around me, seeing so much change while I feel stuck in place.
Claire has publicly discussed motherhood before. In 2019, she announced she was pausing her acting career to spend time with her three-year-old daughter, Ivy.
She shared with WSJ Magazine that she felt she truly deserved a break, calling it a much-needed and enjoyable indulgence. Knowing she only had about a year left with her loved one, she explained she simply couldn’t handle pushing herself further.
She explained that it wasn’t until she turned 32 that things really clicked for her. She finally felt truly aware and understood what it meant to live a fulfilling and healthy life – it was like a sudden realization about how she was living and who she was meant to be.
The February issue of Harper’s Bazaar UK is on sale from 02 January.
