The new Supergirl movie, starring Milly Alcock, is set to come out on June 26, 2026, so I decided to read the comic book it’s based on. The film draws from the story “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, which was originally published in 2021-2022. It’s part of the new DC Universe continuity.
I was already really looking forward to the new adaptation by director Craig Gillespie and writer Ana Nogueira, but loving the original eight-part story made me even more excited. However, after reading the comic, I’m now a little disappointed about one thing that’s been confirmed regarding Supergirl.
Milly Alcock Confirmed Superman Is In Supergirl
Okay, the trailer was packed – we got Krypto back, and even Jason Momoa as Lobo, which was awesome! But honestly, the thing I noticed most was not seeing David Corenswet as the new Superman. I was really hoping to get a glimpse of him!
Shortly after the first look at the new show in December 2025, Milly Alcock confirmed she does appear alongside David Corenswet as his cousin. The actress, who plays Kara Zor-El, accidentally revealed this while discussing the most difficult scene she filmed for Supergirl, explaining it involved working with “Superman.”
It seems like DC Studios’ James Gunn might have wanted actor David Alcock to stay silent about this, but some believe the news will actually increase fan excitement. This is especially true considering Christopher Reeve didn’t appear in Helen Slater’s 1984 Supergirl movie. Honestly, I wish I shared that enthusiasm!
I Am Wary Of Superman’s Appearance In Supergirl
The new comic, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, is similar to the movie True Grit. Supergirl teams up with Eve Ridley’s character to find the man (played by Matthias Schoenaerts) who killed her father. It’s essentially a story about revenge and a journey across planets.
A key part of what makes this comic special is that, despite constant references to her famous cousin, he never actually shows up. So, I was disappointed to hear the rumors about Superman being involved in the adaptation are true. I honestly don’t see how they can include him without it feeling forced or taking away from the main story.
The story of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow focuses entirely on Kara and Ruthye, and its strength lies in their complete reliance on each other. They face numerous difficult challenges with no outside assistance, making their journey both compelling and unique.
As a big fan, I’d really dislike seeing that particular part of the story get lost if Superman just suddenly shows up to save the day – it feels totally unnecessary. Honestly, I’m hoping if it does happen, it’s just a brief, funny moment – something like a quick gag – and they don’t make a big deal out of it.
I Also Question How Lobo Will Be Involved In Supergirl
It’s also worth noting that Lobo isn’t in the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic, even though he’s been included in this adaptation. I’m not overly worried about what his role will be in Supergirl overall, but I am curious to see how the writers plan to incorporate him into the story.
Let me be clear: I’m really happy to see Jason Momoa cast in this new role, as it seems much better suited to him than Aquaman – honestly, he even anticipated playing this type of character before joining the DC Universe. However, I was relieved to hear the actor from The Minecraft Movie say his part in Supergirl is small. A larger role could make him feel unnecessary in a story where he doesn’t really fit.
I’m really enjoying Kara and Ruthye’s journey, and they keep running into the strangest beings! It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Lobo popped up during one of their adventures. Actually, I think it would be awesome – and make a lot of sense – if Ruthye met him before Supergirl, maybe even as someone she questions about Krem’s death. It would add a really interesting twist!
I’ve always believed comic book movies and shows should feel fresh and unique – nobody wants just a copy of the original story in a different format. Interestingly, one of the things I loved most about Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow was that Superman wasn’t included.
Look, I really like David Corenswet as Superman, and I’m hoping his portrayal is awesome. But honestly, the most important thing is that he doesn’t overshadow Milly Alcock’s Supergirl. I need to see something that makes me genuinely excited about her story and believe in this new take on Supergirl. Give me a reason to be hyped, you know?
