Tom Hiddleston’s popular spy series is gaining traction on streaming platforms in the new year. The British show, which first aired in 2016, is now available for its second season and is currently ranking on Prime Video’s charts in 14 countries, including the U.S., according to data from FlixPatrol.
I’ve been following The Night Manager, and it’s doing really well! Here in the US, it’s currently number eight. But it’s a huge hit overseas – it’s actually at number two in Belgium, Ireland, and Poland, which is amazing to see!
Based on the novel by John le Carré, The Night Manager features Tom Hiddleston as Jonathan Pine, a former British soldier. The series follows Pine as he uncovers a dangerous connection between intelligence agencies and the illegal arms trade within the governments of Britain and the United States. To get close to dangerous arms dealer Richard Onslow Roper (played by Hugh Laurie), Pine is forced to operate as a criminal.
The first season of The Night Manager received widespread critical praise and was recognized with numerous awards. Over its two seasons, the series earned 36 nominations and won 11 awards, including two Emmys. Susanne de Bier was honored for her directing, and Victor Reyes won an Emmy for the show’s music.
The Night Manager Was a Star Role for Tom Hiddleston
Critics also loved The Night Manager, especially Tom Hiddleston’s performance. The first season has a 91% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviewers highlighting the show’s clever writing, exciting plot, and the captivating performances of Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston.
Hiddleston previously hinted that Richard Roper, played by Laurie in Season 1, embodies cynicism and a willingness to be involved in wrongdoing. This character deeply angers Pine, and Angela Burr understands why – both believe people like Roper shouldn’t succeed.
He explained that at the start of Season 2, the character’s anger has been hidden and pushed down, along with his true identity, history, and painful experiences. He described it as a dangerous situation waiting to erupt.
The latest season of the show sees Tom Hiddleston return as John Pine, who is sent on a new mission to Colombia. He’s tasked with investigating a dangerous arms dealer named Teddy Dos Santos (played by Diego Calva) and his partner, Roxana Bolanos (Camila Morrone). As Pine goes undercover, he discovers hidden secrets and widespread corruption. The season follows his attempt to stop a dangerous plan before it’s too late.
Joining Tom Hiddleston, actors Alistair Petrie, Douglas Hodge, David Harewood, and Michael Nardone are returning from the first season. New cast members include Camila Morrone, Diego Calva, Indira Varma, Paul Chahidi, Hayley Squires, Unax Ugalde, and Kirby Howell-Baptiste.
Season 2 of The Night Manager is now available to watch on BBC and iPlayer, starting today, January 1st. If you prefer to stream, it will be on Prime Video starting January 11th. You can also watch Season 1 of The Night Manager on Prime Video right now.
