Almost ten years after the TV series The Night Manager appeared to finish its story, an unexpected event sparked the idea for a second season, based on John le Carré’s novel.
Season one of The Night Manager premiered in 2016 as a six-episode series adapted from John le Carré’s 1993 novel. The show stars Tom Hiddleston as Jonathan Pine, a former soldier and hotel manager drawn into a secret mission by British intelligence. Their target is Richard Roper, an international arms dealer played by Hugh Laurie. The story was intended as a single, complete season with no follow-up planned.
Around ten years after the original series aired, writer David Farr started considering how to continue the story. The idea came to him on December 13, 2020, sparked by a vivid image. As he described to The New York Times, he suddenly pictured a car heading towards a child, which gave him the inspiration to revisit the soldier’s journey and develop new storylines for The Night Manager.
It was a strange coincidence that the night I started brainstorming ideas for the show was also the day John le Carré died. Although it was just chance, his passing actually gave us all a stronger feeling of dedication as we worked on the project. I know it sounds unbelievable – most people probably wouldn’t believe me – but I’m telling the truth.
That’s odd. I’m not sure why that came to mind – I haven’t thought about ‘The Night Manager’ in ages. It’s a story so unbelievable, people wouldn’t believe it. It’s likely just a random thought, or maybe there’s something to the idea of animals sensing things. Honestly, I have no idea – it just is what it is.
Simon Cornwell, son of author John le Carré and executive producer of The Night Manager, was initially skeptical of the story. However, he still thought a second installment was a good idea and that Robert Farr was the perfect person to write it. He believes his father’s death allowed Farr the freedom to create his own vision for the series, explaining, “I suspect the reality is that with my dad’s passing, he was finally liberated to begin writing his own story for The Night Manager.”
John le Carré originally intended The Night Manager to be a single season. However, he seemed more open to continuing the story after seeing the finale, but only if future episodes were as strong as, or better than, the first season. This high standard meant that developing a second season took a considerable amount of time.
The novelist’s son feels his late father would have been most proud of the second season of The Night Manager. He also said the new episodes remained faithful to John le Carré’s original story and writing style, and that was the most important thing.
I wish my dad could be here to see this – I’m really proud of what we’ve accomplished, and I believe it reflects his values and ideas.
The second season of The Night Manager will premiere on Prime Video with three episodes on January 11, 2026. After that, a new episode will be released each week, with the finale airing on February 1, 2026.
