The final season of Stranger Things was expected to be a big success for Netflix, but a technical issue briefly disrupted viewers’ experience with another streaming platform outage.
Netflix briefly went down Wednesday evening right as the final episodes of Stranger Things Season 5 started streaming. This was actually the second time this season that a surge of Stranger Things fans caused the service to crash. The outage happened around 5 p.m. Pacific Time, when everyone was trying to watch the finale.

Variety reports that Netflix experienced a brief outage lasting about one minute. The problem was fixed when users refreshed the app, but it still quickly spread on social media, especially considering Netflix has faced issues handling popular releases in the past.
Second Season 5 Outage Raises Reliability Questions
This wasn’t the first time Netflix went down. A bigger outage happened on November 26th, right when the first four episodes of Season 5 were released. That problem lasted about five minutes, preventing many people from watching the new season when it launched.

Previous seasons of Stranger Things have also pushed Netflix’s systems to their limits. For example, the Season 4 finale in July 2022 caused technical difficulties for some viewers, and the platform experienced problems with its livestream during the Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul boxing match last year.
Although Netflix hasn’t had major disruptions often lately, these repeated problems during big releases show how much pressure the service faces when lots of people are watching at the same time.
Christmas Day Release Avoided Issues
Netflix’s systems performed well when the second part of Season 5 launched on Christmas Day. This release brought in the platform’s biggest Christmas Day audience ever, implying that the high demand for the finale caused a larger spike in viewers than previous releases.

From December 22nd to 28th, the fifth season of Stranger Things was watched 34.5 million times, making it the most popular title on Netflix worldwide during that week. When it first launched, the season had an incredible 59.6 million views, breaking the record for any English-language series on the platform.
The data shows that Stranger Things is still one of the few streaming shows that can get huge numbers of people watching at the same time—and that’s when technical problems become really obvious.
A Finale Treated Like an Event
As a big fan, I noticed Netflix really went all out with the finale – they didn’t just drop it online like usual. They wanted it to be a real event, so alongside the streaming release, they actually showed the final episode in a few theaters on New Year’s Eve. It felt special!

Ross Duffer, a co-creator of the show, reported that over 1.1 million people signed up for screenings in theaters, and 3,500 showings were completely sold out at 620 locations across the country. This approach showed Netflix is increasingly interested in releasing content as special events, but it also meant ensuring everything ran smoothly was critical.
A Pattern Netflix Can’t Ignore
Although the latest Netflix crash during the release of Stranger Things didn’t last long, the fact that it happened is more important than how long it lasted. Netflix has had several outages coincide with major new releases, suggesting the platform continues to have trouble handling a sudden surge in viewers.

As our company focuses more on events, live shows, and combining elements of theater, these recent challenges highlight that simply getting bigger doesn’t automatically make things secure.
With the end of Stranger Things after almost ten years, Netflix is facing a bit of an ironic situation: the show that brought it the most success also highlights a continuing problem for the streaming service.
