Happy New Year! A new year always feels like a fresh start, and 2026 promises some exciting movies. While many of the films I’m looking forward to are based on existing stories – like the book adaptations of Project Hail Mary and Sunrise on the Reaping, the DC film Supergirl, and Christopher Nolan’s take on The Odyssey – I really want to highlight the sequels that are coming out in 2026.
Hollywood loves sequels, and there are plenty more coming – I’ve currently identified twenty-three with confirmed release dates. But which five am I most excited to see? Let’s take a look, starting with the earliest releases.

Ready Or Not 2: Here I Come (April 10, 2026)
I’m really excited for Searchlight’s Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, which is the first sequel coming out in 2026 that’s caught my attention. It picks up right after the end of the first Ready or Not film, following Samara Weaving’s character, Grace MacCaullay. I wasn’t expecting a sequel at first, but the trailer has totally convinced me it’s a great idea.
The movie boasts a fantastic cast, especially with Hugo Weaving returning. Joining him is Kathryn Newton as his sister, and they’ll both be on the run. The hunters pursuing them will be played by a great group of actors, including Sarah Michelle Gellar, David Cronenberg, Elijah Wood, Kevin Durand, and Néstor Carbonell. Ready or Not 2 looks like a lot of fun, and it feels like a sequel that makes sense. While I’m also looking forward to Scream 7, I’m much more excited about this one, as the Scream franchise has had so many installments recently.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 (May 1, 2026)
I’m really looking forward to The Devil Wears Prada 2, which is planned for release twenty years after the first movie. While the original didn’t necessarily need a sequel, the first film is so popular that I’m excited to see what happens with these characters after all this time. I’m especially optimistic about this one because almost everyone from the original – including the writer and director – is returning. They clearly understand how much the first movie means to fans, and wouldn’t be involved unless they had a good story to tell.
The upcoming release of The Devil Wears Prada 2 feels like a rare treat for moviegoers, reminiscent of the films from the 2000s. I’m excited to see what Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci, and the new cast members bring to the sequel, especially given the buzz created by the set photos. The fact that Disney is releasing it at the start of summer suggests they have high expectations for its success.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day (July 31, 2026)
I’m really looking forward to Spider-Man: Brand New Day, coming out in summer 2026. As a lifelong Spider-Man fan, this movie feels different and exciting. It’s the first time an actor has played Spider-Man in four solo films, and it seems like Tom Holland’s version will be branching out on its own, separate from the main Marvel Cinematic Universe, in a way we haven’t seen before.
I have a lot of questions going into the new movie – I’m especially curious about how the characters of Tom Holland and Zendaya will reconnect, and what role Sadie Sink will play. I was really pleased to hear they focused on practical effects and filming techniques this time around, and I’m excited to see the final result.

Practical Magic 2 (September 18, 2026)
My top pick for a spooky season sequel is Practical Magic 2. Like a long-awaited follow-up to The Devil Wears Prada, it’s been a long time since the original film in 1998, and it feels like the start of a trend for revisiting beloved movies. I imagine watching Practical Magic 2 with my mom and grandma, or having a fun girls’ night with friends – it’s that kind of movie. There aren’t many new releases I can say that about! Plus, seeing Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock reprise their roles as the Owens sisters is going to be amazing.

Dune: Part 3 (December 18, 2026)
Rounding out my top five most anticipated movies is Dune: Part Three, which finished filming just last month. Interestingly, even though Avengers: Doomsday comes out on the same day, it didn’t quite make my list. I’m a little excited for it, but I’m starting to feel a bit tired of Marvel movies. So far, the Dune films have been incredible to see in theaters, and I’m really eager to see how the story continues. I actually liked the second movie even more than the first, and I’m still completely impressed with Dune: Part Two. I’ll be counting down the days until this one comes out!
Besides my top five, there are a few other upcoming movies worth mentioning. I’m keeping an eye on Scream 7 and Avengers: Doomsday, though I’m not as excited about them as the ones I already discussed. They both feature returning stars, and I hope they surprise me! Toy Story 5 is another big sequel coming out this year, but I haven’t been as impressed with Pixar’s recent films – which might just be a matter of personal preference at this point in my life.
Anyway, that’s where I’m at! I encourage you to check out the calendar yourself and make your own.
