There’s talk that Marvel Studios is planning a spin-off series centered around a popular X-Men character soon. With the return of mutants to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2024 through Deadpool & Wolverine, several original X-Men actors are set to appear in 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday. After that film and its follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027, Marvel will need to find a new group of actors to continue the X-Men’s story.
I’m so excited to hear that Marvel is finally working on a Wolverine project for the next phase of the MCU! From what I’ve heard, it’s going to be part of the stories they tell after the Multiverse Saga wraps up. It might be a special on Disney+ or a full movie – we don’t know yet. But Wolverine won’t be alone! There are a bunch of other mutant-focused projects planned, and they’re even rebooting the X-Men movie, which is awesome! I’m especially happy to hear Jake Schreier, the director of Thunderbolts, is heading that up.
This news follows a recent report from My Time To Shine Hello that Marvel is developing a new Wolverine movie. The report suggests Hugh Jackman will reprise his role as James “Logan” Howlett, following his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Deadpool & Wolverine.
Rumors about a new “Wolverine” project gained traction when fans discovered a trademark filing on Justia Trademarks in mid-December. The filing, which covers things like movies and multimedia content, included a logo-style image featuring the word “Wolverine” in a distinctive, carefully spaced font.
I’m so excited about the X-Men joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe! Right now, Marvel Studios has one movie officially in the works, directed by Jake Schreier. But the best part? It sounds like we’ll see some of our favorite actors from the old X-Men movies reprise their roles in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday in 2026, and even again in Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027! It’s going to be amazing to see those characters continue their stories within the MCU.
What To Expect From Marvel Studios’ Wolverine Project

Although Marvel Studios hasn’t started casting new actors for the X-Men yet, Hugh Jackman may not be finished playing Wolverine. In addition to a planned appearance in Avengers: Secret Wars, and potentially an earlier return in Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel might work with Jackman again to continue his character’s story.
Marvel is considering an R-rated special for Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, potentially similar to the upcoming Punisher project starring Jon Bernthal, and slated for release around 2026. This could allow Wolverine to have his own standalone story, either continuing from the universe established in Deadpool & Wolverine or moving him into the main Marvel Cinematic Universe (Earth-616). This approach would also help differentiate Jackman’s Wolverine from Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool, and could allow Marvel to recapture the popularity of Jackman’s previous Wolverine films.
Marvel is also considering a new movie starring Logan, similar to his previous Wolverine films. This could take place either before or after the events of the Avengers movies, potentially introducing Logan to a different world with fresh challenges and settings – maybe even revisiting his familiar base in Madripoor.
Hugh Jackman has been careful not to confirm or deny rumors about returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fueling speculation about his future with the role. He appears just as eager to keep the possibility alive as Marvel is to continue his story, particularly given how much he’s enjoyed working on Deadpool & Wolverine.
Look, nobody’s officially saying Hugh Jackman is coming back as Wolverine, or if someone else will take over the claws anytime soon. But trust me, this character isn’t going anywhere. Marvel isn’t letting Wolverine – especially in that classic yellow and blue suit – disappear from their plans. He’ll definitely be back in the mix somehow.
