Fearne Cotton hopes to leave behind feelings of shame, guilt, and concern over whether people like her by 2026, as she revealed in a heartfelt New Year’s message.
The TV presenter, 44, took to her Instagram with a video sharing her plans for New Year’s Eve.
She told her followers that she’s unfortunately unable to attend a friend’s party tonight. She’s feeling really unwell – you can tell from her red nose and tired eyes – and is staying home to rest.
‘But here’s what I’m going to do instead.
New Year’s is interesting because we often feel pressure to make long lists of goals and changes we want to achieve in the coming year.
It’s a really difficult challenge, because while I believe we influence many of life’s results, plenty of things happen completely beyond our control.

Instead, I’m planning to make a list tonight outlining how I want to respond to different situations. It’s a way for me to feel more in control.
I want to be genuine in my reactions, and that means caring less about whether people approve of me. I also want to react without feeling guilty, because guilt just doesn’t help anything.
‘I want to react to things without shame, because it feels horrible, and gets me nowhere.
I’m working on responding to things without letting my ego get in the way. I realize my ego often makes me act defensively and feel less compassionate, and that’s something I want to change.
I’m going to spend tonight resting in bed, even though I’m not feeling well, and I’ll be using a heated blanket to try and feel a little more comfortable.
‘But whatever you’re doing, Happy New Year.’
Alongside the post, she penned: ‘Full of lurgy, full of contemplation.
‘This heavy cold is forcing me to do very little which I’m not good at.

By 2026, I hope to let go of shame, guilt, and constantly wondering if people like me. It’ll be tough, but I think it’s worth striving for. What about you?
This follows Fearne Cotton’s story about being fired by Simon Cowell and the thoughtful gift Sharon Osbourne gave her after she exited the show The Xtra Factor.
The presenter hosted the show for a single season in 2007 before being succeeded by her friend, Holly Willoughby.
In an August Instagram video showcasing her closet, Fearne revealed she was ‘let go’ from the show, but Sharon did give her a Prada handbag as a parting gift.
She started by saying she was mentioning a lot of names, but figured we wanted to hear the stories anyway.
Sharon Osbourne gave me this bag as a gift after I finished working on Xtra Factor ages ago. It was after I was let go, actually, but at least I got a nice bag out of the experience!
Fearne displayed a new, bright pink designer clutch – still in its original box – and then started looking through the rest of her clothes.
Fearne Cotton, now focusing on her wellness brand Happy Place, first became well-known as a presenter on children’s television channels CITV and CBBC. She later moved on to host shows like Radio 1, Celebrity Juice, and briefly presented The Xtra Factor and Love Island.

In an interview with The Times last year, she described experiencing job loss repeatedly, sometimes without even being informed. She explained that it often felt like simply switching on the television to see someone else in her former role.
Life feels like a game sometimes, like playing Monopoly where you’re constantly trying to avoid trouble.
Fearne has shared that dealing with the challenges of being a single mom has actually helped her cry less since her separation from Jesse Wood.
The TV presenter recently opened up about her divorce after ten years of marriage, revealing she sometimes struggles with the challenges of being a single mother to two young children while also managing her demanding career. She admitted there are days when she finds herself overwhelmed and crying alone in her car.
Fearne Cotton admitted to feeling like she’s constantly making mistakes and not succeeding at much, in a recent interview on the Women’s Health podcast, Just As Well.
She described the experience of being a single mother as incredibly demanding, saying it feels like constantly trying to manage too many things at once and inevitably making mistakes with everyday tasks.
Monday morning was a disaster. I couldn’t find anything the kids would eat for breakfast. We had cereal without milk, butter without bread, and I couldn’t even make pancakes because we were out of maple syrup. It was a complete mess.
Fearne admitted she often felt like she was making mistakes and not excelling at things, but she generally enjoyed the process anyway. She emphasized that she enjoyed ‘most of it.’
The experienced TV host revealed she and Jesse Wood, son of Rolling Stones bassist Ronnie Wood, split after ten years of marriage last December.
