I’ve long predicted Steve Harrington might not survive in Stranger Things. But while watching Season 5, I started to think maybe a different main character will be the one to die. The latest trailer showed Dustin looking really upset, and I think he’s reacting to someone’s death – but it probably isn’t Steve.
Seeing Gaten Matarazzo’s character react so strongly in the trailer initially made me think Steve was going to die. But after looking at a particular image, I’m starting to wonder if there’s more to the story than meets the eye.

Steve Dying Is Too Obvious
Fans have long speculated about Steve’s potential death, and those theories continue as Season 5 airs in 2025. The recent episodes, especially his heartfelt reunion with Dustin and their promise to look out for each other, have made the possibility of him dying even more impactful.
Okay, so everyone’s talking about whether Joe Keery’s character might die in the finale, right? Honestly, that’s why I think he’s not going to. It feels way too predictable! The writers have really been hinting at it, and I’ve got a feeling they’re going to pull a fast one on us and go in a completely different direction. I’m expecting a real shocker!
A lot of viewers think Steve will die, and the trailer with Dustin screaming seems to support that. However, I’m starting to believe a different character might be the one who doesn’t survive this season.

I Have A Theory That Mike Might Die
Let’s think this through. Dustin tends to react strongly whenever a character dies, and he’d likely scream in panic if it was one of his close friends – like Steve, Mike, Lucas, or Will – who was in danger.
Considering everything, I doubt Steve will be killed off – it’s too predictable. I also believe Lucas and Max will end up together, so he’s likely safe. Given all Will has already endured, and how devastated Joyce would be, I don’t see him being killed either. That really leaves Mike as the most likely candidate.
I’ve been wondering if Finn Wolfhard’s character, Mike, might be the one who dies in this episode, and the new trailer makes me think that’s even more likely.
He’s really come into his own this season, particularly in the first part. From helping Holly discover her courage to rescuing those children in Episode 4, he’s shown incredible bravery. His dedication to saving his sister is also clear. He’s demonstrated significant growth and selflessness, making a final, heroic sacrifice a powerfully emotional way to conclude his story.
I believe Mike’s death would be particularly impactful because he was originally the leader of the group, especially in the first season. It would be a very sad moment, but it would also feel significant to the story.
Ultimately, I don’t believe Steve will die, but Mike seems more likely to be in danger. Of course, anything is possible in the final episode of Stranger Things. Be sure to watch when it premieres on Netflix December 31st to see what Dustin is shouting about!
