Marvel Studios Admits Defeat With Thor’s Avengers: Doomsday Redesign

Marvel Studios is rethinking a major change they made to Thor’s appearance for his next appearance in Avengers: Doomsday. Thor has been a key hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for 15 years, appearing in his own films and alongside other heroes. Throughout that time, actor Chris Hemsworth has portrayed the character with several different looks, demonstrating his flexibility with the role.

I just watched the new trailer for Avengers: Doomsday and I’m so excited to see Thor back! Chris Hemsworth looks amazing, and it’s really cool they’ve included his daughter, India Rose Hemsworth, who plays his adopted daughter, Love, in the movie. He’s sporting a shorter haircut this time, but still has that awesome beard we all know and love!

I’ve really noticed a change in Chris Hemsworth’s appearance in his Marvel movies. It started with Thor: Ragnarok back in 2017 – apparently, Stan Lee’s barber gave him a pretty short haircut right before his big fight on Sakaar! He kept that shorter style through Avengers: Infinity War the following year. Then, after the very beginning of Avengers: Endgame in 2019, he went back to his longer hair, and that’s how he appeared in the most recent Thor film, Thor: Love and Thunder from 2022. That was the last time we’ve seen him in live-action in the MCU so far.

The trailer for Doomsday features a scene of Thor kneeling and praying while holding Stormbreaker on a hilltop. He originally created Stormbreaker in Infinity War after Hela broke his hammer, Mjolnir, in Ragnarok, and continued to wield it throughout Endgame. However, by the end of Love and Thunder, Thor was back to using the restored Mjolnir, and Love took Stormbreaker into battle as the credits began.

The next Avengers movie, titled Avengers: Doomsday, will be the fifth team-up film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and part of Phase 6. Chris Hemsworth will star alongside a huge cast of at least 29 actors, bringing together heroes from the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four. They’ll face off against Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., in a massive battle for the multiverse. Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2026.

Explaining Marvel’s Decision to Change Thor’s Look in Avengers: Doomsday

Look, as a huge Marvel fan, I’ll admit things got a little shaky with the last Thor movie, Love and Thunder. While it actually did okay at the box office, critics really weren’t impressed. It felt like they tried to pack too much into a short running time and relied a little too heavily on jokes. Plus, I think they didn’t quite do justice to characters like Jane Foster and Gorr – and honestly, some of the special effects weren’t the best. It just didn’t quite live up to the potential, which was a bit disappointing after the previous films.

Many believe Marvel is trying to distance itself from recent experiences by reverting Thor’s appearance to a style that was widely praised. While Ragnarok was a critical success for Chris Hemsworth and the Russo Brothers effectively used that version of Thor in Infinity War – including his shorter hair and Stormbreaker – Hemsworth has also expressed a desire for a simpler hair routine. This will likely be a welcome change for the actor as he begins work on Doomsday.

Chris Hemsworth, having played Thor since the early days of the Avengers, is predicted to be a central figure in the upcoming ‘Doomsday’ project. Rumors suggest exciting scenes are planned between his character and established X-Men heroes, which will expand on Thor’s story after more than ten years in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Giving Thor a clear goal and raising the stakes could be exactly what the character needs to get back on track. The film offers exciting possibilities for new alliances and pairings – including a highly anticipated reunion with Loki – and could make Thor a major highlight of the upcoming events.
