Get ready for Tron: Ares! After a 15-year hiatus, the movie is coming to Disney+, and ScreenRant has the exclusive release date. Directed by Joachim Rønning, this new installment features Jared Leto as the iconic digital program, who teams up with ENCOM’s CEO, Eve Kim (Greta Lee), to prevent Evan Peters’ character, Julian Dillinger, from obtaining a code that would make digital soldiers permanently real.
Just over two months after its theatrical release, ScreenRant is excited to share that Tron: Ares will be available to stream on Disney+ starting January 7th. We also have a special sneak peek featuring stars Lee, Peters, and Gillian Anderson discussing their favorite Disney films – from Lady and the Tramp to Pirates of the Caribbean with Johnny Depp – and how those movies have influenced their work. You can watch the exclusive clip below!
Similar to previous Tron films, Disney’s Tron: Ares received a mixed reaction when it came out in theaters. Critics had differing opinions, largely praising the visual effects and the Nine Inch Nails soundtrack, but finding the story and themes about artificial intelligence less compelling. The film also didn’t do well financially, earning only $142.2 million worldwide on a production budget of $347.5 million, resulting in a loss of over $132 million for the studio.
Even though there have been some challenges, there’s still a lot of excitement building for the new Tron: Ares on Disney+. While critics gave the film a mixed reception (54% on Rotten Tomatoes), viewers really enjoyed it, giving it an 84% rating. They were especially impressed by the action sequences and visual effects.
The movie came out during a slow period for box office sales in 2025. While some smaller films, like Black Phone 2, did well, bigger budget movies such as Tron, The Smashing Machine, and One Battle After Another failed to attract audiences. This suggested the movie’s performance wasn’t necessarily about the film itself, but rather a general lack of interest in going to the cinema at that time.
The Tron movies have often become more popular over time. Although the original 1982 film and 2010’s Legacy didn’t earn huge amounts of money in theaters, they became very popular on home video and streaming. People enjoyed revisiting the visually stunning digital world of The Grid.
Now that Tron: Ares is confirmed to stream on Disney+ starting January 7th, the film can start gaining a dedicated fanbase. And because the first two Tron movies are already available on the platform – and were recently updated to 4K quality right before Ares hit theaters – we can expect a lot more people to watch them in the months ahead.
