The sci-fi horror series The X-Files, which first aired in 1993, remains the gold standard for police procedural dramas, and no other show has quite matched its influence. It originally ran for nine seasons and has been revived twice, in 2016 and 2018, with another reboot currently in the works. Before any news about the reboot is released, fans can enjoy all nine seasons of The X-Files for free on Pluto TV starting January 1, 2026.
Fans can now stream all 11 seasons of the beloved sci-fi show for free! That includes all 218 original episodes plus the 2016 revival. You’ll be able to watch whenever you want through on-demand streaming, or tune into a dedicated 24/7 channel. The channel will start by showing every episode in order, and then feature themed weekend binge-watching events.
Pluto TV will have channels devoted to classic sci-fi shows like Star Trek, The Twilight Zone, Stargate, and Doctor Who.
The X-Files Is Getting Rebooted
Debuting over 30 years ago, The X-Files remains a hugely popular and influential television show. The sci-fi series won 16 Primetime Emmy Awards and captivated viewers with its unusual mysteries and the compelling relationship between its main characters, Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.
Chris Carter developed the series, featuring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson in the lead roles. Supporting actors included Robert Patrick as John Doggett, Annabeth Gish as Monica Reyes, and Mitch Pileggi as Walter Skinner, who oversaw Mulder and Scully’s work.
The show originally ran for nine seasons, ending in 2002. After more than ten years, it returned for two additional seasons in 2016 and 2018. Now, a new version of the series is in development with Ryan Coogler, the director of Sinners, leading the project. Chris Carter, who created the original show, stated in February 2024 that he is not working on this latest reboot.
While specific information is limited, Ryan Coogler announced in April 2025 that this will be his next film, following the successful release of Sinners.
The actor recently said he loves the character he played, calling him his all-time favorite. He’d be curious to explore what the character has been up to since the show ended, and where they might pick up the story now. He also mentioned he’s never been asked to return because of his busy schedule.
