Laura Carmichael breaks her silence on her secret wedding to Downton Abbey co-star Michael C. Fox as she discusses finding love on set

Laura Carmichael has revealed she secretly married her Downton Abbey costar, Michael C. Fox, and shared how they fell in love while working on the show.

They first connected in 2014 while working on the fifth season of the ITV show, where they played the characters Lady Edith and Andrew Parker.

Michael announced in September that he and his partner had secretly gotten married and had their first child in 2021.

Laura recently discussed her relationship and working with Michael for the first time, in an interview with Kirsty Wark on BBC Radio 4.

When asked if she found romance with a co-star, Laura confirmed she was dating Michael Fox, who plays Andy Parker on the show.

I’ve been watching Downton Abbey since it began, and I was so thrilled to see Andrew, played by Michael, start as a humble second footman. It was a long journey, but I was absolutely delighted when he finally earned the position of butler after Mr. Carson’s well-deserved retirement. It felt like a truly satisfying moment for him and for all of us fans!

You know, it’s really amusing to me how many people struggle with the whole ‘upstairs-downstairs’ dynamic that Laura was talking about. It’s just so interesting that it’s hard for some to wrap their heads around it!

We filmed many scenes together, but when he was at Highclere, he was usually just in the background, often holding a tray.

There was a humorous moment during filming when Michael had to hold a tray full of champagne glasses for a long time while the crew prepared for the next shot.

He realized his shoelaces were untied and asked me, “Could you hold this for a moment?”

Just a moment before five crew members rushed over, I was holding the tray. They all insisted on taking it from me, telling me it wasn’t necessary for me to carry it.

‘And we were like, he’s been holding it all day.’

Earlier this year, Michael confirmed he and Laura had tied the knot in recent years.

During an NBC special commemorating the final episode of Downton Abbey, Michael expressed his gratitude, saying the show had a significant impact on his life and helped shape who he is today.

Lesley Nicol, a co-star, playfully asked the couple, ‘Imagine someone told you that you’d meet your wife and have a child – that would really change everything!’

Michael gushed: ‘I know. It’s incredible.’

Michael and Laura, who began dating in 2014, haven’t shared any updates about their wedding plans.

The Daily Mail has contacted Michael and Laura’s representatives for comment.

Laura was seen wearing a noticeable ring on her left ring finger while attending the London premiere of Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale.

Laura chose a unique black and white lace dress, and her partner, Michael, looked sharp in a black blazer as they met up.

The cast and crew came together to mark the end of the popular historical series, which ran for 15 years on television and was followed by three films.

The couple generally keeps to themselves, and it wasn’t until May 2022 that it became known they had a son, Luca, some time before that.

According to a source who spoke to The Sun on Sunday, Laura and Michael were overjoyed to become parents and appreciated having some private time to savor the experience.

‘Laura’s taken motherhood in her stride and it’s added another string to her bow.’

Even though they generally keep their relationship private, Laura recently shared how grateful she is to have met Michael while working on Downton Abbey.

In a 2019 interview with Town & Country, she expressed her happiness, saying, ‘I’m so fortunate to have found love and made great friends!’

She feels fortunate to have a supportive and understanding relationship. Knowing someone has your back makes tough times easier.

It’s incredibly rewarding when you collaborate with someone and can openly discuss difficult topics, and they truly understand where you’re coming from.

Laura strives to balance a regular life with playing complex characters, a philosophy she adopted after being inspired by her Downton Abbey colleagues.

She explained that she’s noticed a pattern with many of the actors from Downton Abbey: they strongly value family, friends, and their personal lives. Because of this strong foundation, they approach exciting work opportunities with a positive attitude, dedication, and appreciation.

Michael has previously talked about their relationship, explaining that they preferred to keep their personal life separate from their work on Downton Abbey.

He explained to the Sunday Post that they wanted to avoid any issues while working together, and didn’t want it to affect their professional relationship.

‘It was great, though, to go to work with your best pal.’
