Guillermo del Toro Hellboy Netflix Release 2026 Confirmed

As a huge movie fan, I’m so excited to share some great news! One of my all-time favorite superhero films – and seriously, it’s stunning to look at – is finally coming to a streaming service. It’s not a Marvel or DC movie, though! Guillermo del Toro‘s classic is officially hitting Netflix in January, and I couldn’t be happier!

Starting January 1st, the 2004 superhero movie Hellboy will be available to stream on Netflix, giving the new year a thrilling start, according to MovieWeb. The film was previously available on HBO Max, Hulu, and The Roku Channel, but will soon only be found on Netflix. Fans looking to watch Hellboy will need a Netflix subscription, as it will become exclusive to the platform in early 2026.

Ron Perlman first played the supernatural hero Hellboy on the big screen in a 2004 film, following his earlier role in Blade II. The movie, based on the Dark Horse comic created by Mike Mignola, received generally positive reviews, with many praising its impressive visuals. Even twenty years later, Hellboy remains a standout superhero film, often considered more visually striking than movies based on characters from more popular comic publishers like Marvel and DC.

Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman, along with many of the original actors, returned for Hellboy II: The Golden Army. While the sequel received generally good reviews, it didn’t perform strongly in theaters, leading to the cancellation of any future films or spin-offs. Currently, you can watch the 2008 sequel on Starz, but it doesn’t seem likely to be added to Netflix next year like the first film.

What’s Next for Hellboy Movies?

Even though Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy movie series didn’t last long, the character remains incredibly popular with comic book fans. The 2004 film and its sequel are often considered hidden gems among superhero movies, gaining a dedicated following over the past twenty years. Despite this strong fanbase, Hellboy hasn’t quite found mainstream success on the big screen.

A new Hellboy movie came out in 2019, but it wasn’t well-received by fans. Many people were upset that Ron Perlman wasn’t reprising his role and wanted the original series to continue instead of a complete restart. The 2019 film performed poorly in theaters, and fans largely rejected it, effectively ending any plans for future installments.

The film received another remake, but reviews were still generally unfavorable. It only played in a few theaters, suggesting the studio didn’t have much confidence in it. Consequently, most comic book movie fans haven’t seen this latest version, and there are currently no plans to continue the story with sequels or spin-offs.

The franchise has already been rebooted twice without success, making another attempt seem improbable. However, a return to theaters isn’t entirely impossible—it would likely require fulfilling long-held fan requests. Nearly two decades after The Golden Army, the most promising path forward for the series is to

Sadly, Guillermo del Toro has confirmed that a third Hellboy movie won’t be made. Ron Perlman has repeatedly said he won’t reprise his role without del Toro’s involvement. This has created a deadlock, leaving fans disheartened about the future of the franchise. Unless either del Toro or Perlman changes their mind, it’s unlikely Hellboy 3 will ever happen.

Many fans still consider Hellboy a classic superhero movie. However, efforts to create successful sequels haven’t worked out. With no new films currently planned, the best option for fans is to revisit the original Hellboy movie, now available on streaming.

Hellboy begins streaming on Netflix starting on Jan. 1, 2026.
