20 Most Anticipated Movies of 2026

2026 promises to be a huge year for movie theaters, with several highly anticipated sequels and original blockbusters on the way. Christopher Nolan, fresh off his Oscar win for Oppenheimer, is returning with another large-scale film, exciting his fans for a summer filled with cinema. Following the success of Superman, DC will release several new movies, and Marvel is hoping to regain its footing with its biggest titles after a recent string of less successful films.

Beyond the biggest blockbusters, there’s plenty to be excited about in the world of film. Tom Cruise is returning to more serious acting roles, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are teaming up on screen once more, and after being put on hold, we’ll finally get to see Coyote vs. Acme. Aaron Sorkin is also working on a new film that’s expected to be as compelling as The Social Network, and the popular series Peaky Blinders is concluding with a special Netflix movie. Overall, it looks like I’ll be spending a lot of time at the movies this year.

‘The Rip’

January 16

Netflix

If you enjoy movies starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, especially those classic thrillers, then you’ll probably appreciate this one too. I don’t think The Rip will be a blockbuster or a huge hit, but it’s exactly the kind of movie I love. Seeing Damon and Affleck together in a crime thriller brings back memories of the 2000s, and while I don’t expect it to be as thrilling as The Departed or The Town, I know I’ll enjoy it. My only disappointment is that I’ll have to watch it at home instead of in a movie theater on January 16.

‘Coyote vs. Acme’

August 28

Ketchup Entertainment

So, you’ve probably heard about the drama surrounding Coyote vs. Acme – the movie Warner Bros. Discovery basically locked away after it was finished. It happened right after they scrapped Batgirl, and everyone online was furious. Now, thankfully, it’s actually going to see the light of day! Honestly, it deserves to be released no matter what, but I’m especially curious to understand why WBD made that original decision. For me, it’s a total nostalgia trip – I grew up with Looney Tunes – but a part of me also really wants this movie to be amazing, just to show them what they were missing!

‘Disclosure Day’

June 12

Universal Pictures

Although I generally prefer Martin Scorsese’s films to Steven Spielberg’s, I recognize and admire great filmmaking from both directors. It’s been surprising and impressive to see Spielberg move away from science fiction – the genre that made him famous – and tackle different kinds of stories in recent years. Just like it was exciting to see Scorsese return to crime dramas with The Irishman, a Steven Spielberg movie about UFOs, planned for 2026, feels like a major event. I think it has the potential to be a huge box office success.

‘Digger’

October 2

Paramount Pictures

Alejandro G. Iñárritu directing is a good reason to go to the movies, but the biggest draw for Judy will likely be Tom Cruise. He’s famous for performing his own stunts and doing a lot of action throughout the 21st century. However, fans know he’s also a talented actor, as seen in films like Magnolia and Rain Man. Judy is meant to showcase his dramatic skills again, and it will be interesting to see if Cruise can still attract audiences to a film that isn’t an action movie like Mission: Impossible, much like we saw with The Rock’s performance in The Smashing Machine.

‘Clayface’

September 11

James Gunn’s new DC Universe got off to a great start this year, and as a longtime DC fan, I’m incredibly excited about what’s coming in 2026. While characters like Clayface and body horror aren’t usually my thing, I love that the DCU is aiming to try out different kinds of movies and storytelling. I’ll definitely be first in line to see if they can make it work! Plus, this will be the first time we see a live-action version of the DCU’s Gotham City, and that’s something I can’t miss.

‘The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender’

October 9

Nickelodeon

I have to confess, I only just discovered Avatar: The Last Airbender relatively recently, but after countless recommendations, I finally watched it, and I’m so glad I waited! While the Netflix live-action show doesn’t really appeal to me, the idea of an animated continuation feels perfect. Honestly, everything I’ve heard about the making of this new film is a little discouraging, but I’m choosing to stay optimistic. I’m a huge fan of the Avatar universe, and I can’t wait to revisit that world.

‘Werwulf’

December 25

Focus Features

I enjoyed watching Nosferatu, but it made me wonder why Robert Eggers isn’t focusing on completely new stories. He’s such a talented director that it feels like a waste to work on remakes. Since I was already familiar with both Nosferatu and Dracula, the adaptation didn’t feel particularly groundbreaking. Now, here’s what the plan is for Werwulf:

As a film buff, I’m immediately hooked by stories set in the past, and this one sounds fantastic. It’s 13th-century England, all misty and atmospheric, and something truly frightening is roaming the countryside. What’s really exciting is that it’s not just some old legend – the scary stories the villagers tell each other are actually happening. It feels like a perfect setup for a genuinely chilling movie!

Even though it’s just a short description, the story immediately grabbed me. It feels like a genuinely creepy folklore horror film – a fresh, original story with a chilling and bleak atmosphere. I’m really excited to see what terrifying story Robert Eggers comes up with.

‘The Social Reckoning’

October 9

Sony Pictures

When I heard Aaron Sorkin was making a follow-up to The Social Network, I wasn’t immediately thrilled. It’s a little strange that David Fincher isn’t directing and Jeremy Strong is taking over, even though he’s a fantastic actor. Still, it’s a Sorkin film, so it could be amazing – potentially even an Oscar contender. At the very least, it’ll likely be a really entertaining movie with strong acting and witty dialogue, and I’m okay with that. Either way, I think it’s a good thing.

’28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’

January 16

Sony Pictures Releasing

I was surprised to hear they’re already making another 28 Days Later movie. The ending of 28 Years Later was definitely strange and depended on a very specific British cultural reference, but I actually liked how weird and unexpected it was. However, since Alex Garland wants to continue the story, I’m on board. I’m looking forward to seeing more of Ralph Fiennes and the potential return of Cillian Murphy.

‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man’

March 6

BBC

I’ve been eagerly anticipating the return of Cillian Murphy in The Immortal Man. While I’m a little puzzled by the movie’s cast – it doesn’t seem to include many actors from the Peaky Blinders TV show – I trust Tommy Shelby’s recommendation, so I’ll definitely be watching. Like 28 Years Later, I was very satisfied with how Peaky Blinders concluded as a series, and I hope this movie doesn’t ruin that feeling. If they’re ending the story with a film, it absolutely needs to be released in theaters.
