Chris Evans is set to reprise his role as Steve Rogers in a future Marvel film, but another familiar face from the Multiverse Saga might not be appearing alongside him. The initial trailer offers a glimpse of Rogers enjoying a peaceful life with his wife, Peggy Carter, and their baby after the events of Avengers: Endgame. While the trailer highlights which heroes will be part of the upcoming crossover event, some viewers believe it subtly hints at a character who won’t be returning.
While Chris Evans is coming back as Captain America, Hayley Atwell is also expected to reprise her role as his wife, Peggy Carter. Peggy has been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since she first appeared in Captain America: The First Avenger in 2011. Though Atwell’s involvement in the upcoming film isn’t a shock, many fans anticipated she would play a different character, which now seems unlikely.
Captain Carter Won’t Return in Avengers: Doomsday
For months, fans speculated Hayley Atwell would return as Peggy Carter, but not just as a regular version of the character. The new Multiverse Saga features a Peggy Carter who became a super soldier instead of Steve Rogers, earning the name Captain Carter. After playing Captain Carter in both What If…? and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, many expected Atwell to bring the character back for Doomsday alongside other heroes from across the multiverse.
With the original Peggy Carter expected to return in Doomsday alongside Steve Rogers, it’s unlikely we’ll see Captain Carter in a movie next year. While Doomsday will feature Peggy Carter in some form, the film probably won’t have time to fully develop multiple versions of the character. It seems Marvel has chosen to feature the Peggy Carter most fans already know from previous Marvel films, leaving little room for Captain Carter’s variant.
Even though the Peggy Carter appearing in Avengers: Doomsday isn’t a superhero, her return offers exciting possibilities for her character. The trailer shows she and Steve Rogers have a son, which adds a new dynamic as they navigate parenthood. The film also has a chance to delve deeper into Peggy and Steve’s relationship, something that was largely unexplored before. Despite not having superpowers, there’s still a lot of potential for compelling stories with this version of Peggy Carter.
Why Captain Carter Shouldn’t Appear in Doomsday
Some fans will likely be happy not to see Captain Carter in the new movie, while others will be disappointed. She became popular through her appearances in the animated series What If…?, which originally featured standalone stories. While it’s a letdown for some, Marvel Studios made the correct decision by not including her in the upcoming film.
Captain Carter, as seen in What If…?, made the ultimate sacrifice in the show’s final episode, giving her life to protect her friends from the Watchers. This heroic act brought the series to a sad conclusion, and her friends will always remember her bravery. Because of this, the Captain Carter most fans know and love won’t be returning in Avengers: Doomsday. If the character does appear, it would have to be a different version, similar to the one we saw in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. However, introducing a completely new Captain Carter might not be worthwhile, as audiences wouldn’t have the same emotional connection to her.
It’s more effective to center the story around the Peggy Carter audiences are already familiar with – the one Steve Rogers reconnects with after Avengers: Endgame. Viewers already feel connected to this version of the character, even if her life story deviates slightly from the original Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline. While seeing Hayley Atwell as Captain Carter again would be fantastic, it’s simply…

With Steve Rogers returning in Avengers: Doomsday, it’s more likely we’ll see the original Peggy Carter rather than a variant like Captain Carter. While a Captain Carter cameo isn’t impossible, the return of Steve and Peggy makes it much less probable. There’s really only space for one version of the character in the film.
Avengers: Doomsday will open in theaters on December 18, 2026.
