James Cameron Reveals He Nearly Beat Steven Spielberg To Jurassic Park Rights & Had “Nastier, R-Rated” Approach To Dinosaurs

Steven Spielberg‘s Jurassic Park, adapted from Michael Crichton’s novel, is a massive success. It’s spawned over five sequels and a whole range of related products, and remains Spielberg’s highest-grossing film, earning $1.1 billion worldwide.

The Jurassic Park movies have become known as major blockbuster events. The films have consistently featured well-known actors, including Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern, Sam Neill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey. Despite its current success, the franchise could have turned out very differently.

According to Comic Basics, James Cameron, the director of Avatar, almost obtained the rights to Jurassic Park before Steven Spielberg. Cameron explained that he attempted to purchase the book rights, but Spielberg secured them just a few hours earlier. However, after seeing Spielberg’s film, Cameron felt it was the right choice, as his vision would have focused on aliens alongside the dinosaurs – a direction he believed wouldn’t have been as suitable as Spielberg’s family-friendly dinosaur movie.

Cameron has said his idea for the Jurassic Park movies would have been much scarier than what audiences ultimately saw. He explained, “He was the right person for the job, not me,” adding that he would have created something too intense and geared towards adults. He described it as being similar to his film Aliens, but with dinosaurs.

Cameron complimented Spielberg’s ability to make Jurassic Park appealing to a wide audience. He explained, “Dinosaurs are something kids love,” but added that adults can enjoy it too. Cameron felt Spielberg didn’t go far enough, stating he would have made the film even more intense and frightening.

Although it would have been fascinating to see James Cameron’s darker vision for Jurassic Park, he’s right about something. The franchise’s popularity and success are partly due to its appeal to all ages. This broad appeal is also why it’s spawned so many video games, comics, and TV shows. Still, imagining a truly terrifying Jurassic Park directed by Cameron is a fun thought.
