‘This Joy Only Exists Because She Existed.’ Billie Lourd Pens Emotional Tribute To Carrie Fisher On The Anniversary Of Her Death

It’s been nine years since the world lost Carrie Fisher, best known as Princess Leia from Star Wars. Beyond her iconic role, she was a passionate advocate for important causes like mental health, women’s rights, and LGBTQ+ equality. But to her daughter, Billie Lourd, she was simply Mom. Lourd honored her mother on the anniversary of her passing, sharing how Fisher brought so much happiness into her life.

December 27 always seems to be a tough day for Billie Lourd, as it marks the day Carrie Fisher died at age 60, four days after experiencing a medical emergency while on a flight. In a lengthy post on Instagram, Lourd wrote about the immense joy she experienced watching her dad run around with her kids like “old souls that have known each other forever.” She continued:

I wouldn’t be experiencing this happiness if it weren’t for my mom. She made this possible, and even though she’s no longer with us, her presence is felt in moments like these. Grief is complex, and right now, it feels like a bittersweet joy – watching my kids with my dad. It’s a feeling I’m embracing, knowing it will likely shift and change throughout the day, as grief rarely stays the same.

Billie Lourd then recalled one of her mom’s famous quotes, writing:

My mom always said that nothing truly ends, it just continues in another form. That’s how I feel about her now – her life isn’t over, it lives on in my children and in the happiness she brought to my life. Thank you, Mom. I’ll miss you forever.

Everyone grieves differently, and Billie Lourd shared that her feelings would likely shift throughout the day. She found comfort in moments of joy, like seeing the love her children have for both her and their father. You can read her complete message below:
