Oscar Isaac & Jessica Chastain’s Under-The-Radar A24 Crime Thriller Officially Comes To HBO Max In A Few Days

Get ready to stream the gripping thriller, A Most Violent Year, on HBO Max! Starring Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain, this 2014 film from director J.C. Chandor (Triple Frontier, All Is Lost) tells the story of an immigrant in 1981 New York City struggling to maintain his business and keep his family safe amidst a surge in crime—making it the city’s most violent year on record.

Starring Albert Brooks, David Oyelowo, and Alessandro Nivola, A Most Violet Year currently boasts an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While the film and its actors received a lot of positive attention, it only earned $12 million at the box office despite costing $20 million to make. It was released before A24 became widely known, before their 2016 hit Moonlight won Best Picture.

Good news for A24 fans! Starting January 1, 2026, you’ll be able to stream A Most Violent Year on HBO Max, according to Warner Bros. Discovery. HBO Max already has a lot of A24 films, and they’re adding more in the new year, including Ex Machina, Bodies Bodies Bodies, While We’re Young, and the acclaimed Moonlight.

HBO Max is adding more A24 films to its selection this January. The Smashing Machine will be available on January 23rd, followed by If I Had Legs I’d Kick You on January 30th. These join previously added critically acclaimed films Sorry, Baby and Materialists. And later this year, A24’s potential Oscar winner, Marty Supreme, will be released in theaters on Christmas Day.

In 2014, Oscar Isaac appeared in both Ex Machina and A Most Violent Year. Most recently, he played the lead role as the doctor in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein alongside Jacob Elordi, a film that many predict will be an Oscar contender in 2026. Isaac also stars in In the Hand of Dante, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival to somewhat mixed reactions.

Since winning an Oscar for her role in the 2021 film The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Jessica Chastain has taken on a variety of roles in movies spanning different genres. She’s appeared in action films like The 355, historical dramas such as Armageddon Time, and the Netflix true-crime film The Good Nurse, and has several new projects on the way. She remains well-known for her thrilling performances in films like Zero Dark Thirty and Molly’s Game.

As someone who really got into A24 early on, and loves digging up lesser-known roles from great actors, I’m excited to hear A Most Violent Year is hitting HBO Max next month. It’ll be a perfect chance to revisit it, and maybe even compare it to some of the other interesting films A24 has put out over the years.
