Actor Mario Rodriguez has filed a lawsuit against Tyler Perry, alleging sexual battery related to their work on the film Boo! A Madea Halloween.
Rodriguez accused the filmmaker of sexually harassing him multiple times over several years at his Los Angeles home. In a legal complaint filed in California, Rodriguez stated that Perry repeatedly made unwanted sexual advances, including an alleged incident in 2018 where Perry hugged him and inappropriately touched him.
Matthew Perry and his lawyer, Alex Spiro, strongly denied the accusations, calling them false and likely an attempt to get money. They pointed out that the accuser’s lawyer had previously sued Perry and lost. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, they said this new claim, like the previous one, was a failed attempt to get money from Perry.
The lawsuit, which was unsuccessful, claimed that Tyler Perry misused his power in the entertainment world to exploit Derek Dixon, a rising actor who appeared on The Oval and Ruthless. Dixon alleged that Perry physically restrained and inappropriately touched him.
Rodriguez is suing for sexual assault, sexual battery, and the emotional trauma they caused. They are also accusing Lionsgate, the company that released Boo! A Madea Halloween, of ignoring reports about Perry’s alleged misconduct. Rodriguez is requesting at least $77 million in compensation.
Documents show Rodriguez first connected with Perry in 2014 when a trainer at an Equinox gym in Los Angeles mentioned Perry was interested in getting his contact information about a possible acting role. Perry then called Rodriguez and suggested he try out for Boo! A Madea Halloween, also hinting that being close to him could help Rodriguez’s career.
After Rodriguez got a small part in a project, Perry invited him over for drinks and a movie. During that visit, Rodriguez claims Perry touched his leg and then made a sexual advance. Rodriguez says he tried to leave, but Perry kept pursuing him and suggested that cooperating would help his career in the film industry.
Following the end of filming in 2016, Perry reportedly reached out to the actor about future work. Rodriguez alleges that during a subsequent visit to his home, Perry again made unwanted physical contact. This time, Rodriguez claims he pushed back and left. The details of the allegations are outlined in the lawsuit below.
Mr. Perry sexually assaulted Mr. Rodriguez by reaching into his underwear, grabbing his penis, and pressing his body against him while making sexual noises and repeatedly telling him to stay.
