Jack Black Hopes For Nacho Libre Sequel

Jack Black has starred in many sequels, but he’s still hoping to make another Nacho Libre movie. The original 2006 comedy, which he made with writer and producer Mike White (following their work on Orange County and School of Rock), told the story of a cook and Catholic friar who becomes a luchador wrestler to earn money for the children at his struggling orphanage.

Released as Jack Black was becoming a major star, Nacho Libre didn’t receive much praise from critics, but it was a huge success with audiences, earning over $129 million on a $35 million budget. The film quickly gained a dedicated following and helped solidify Black’s status as a leading actor. It also became one of Nickelodeon Movies’ most successful live-action films, second only to Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events.

Jack Black recently told ScreenRant that he’d love to make a sequel to Nacho Libre. While discussing his new movie Anaconda with co-star Paul Rudd, Black mentioned his desire to reprise the role. Rudd suggested a follow-up to School of Rock, which Black called “incredible.” Black admitted revisiting Nacho Libre after almost 20 years “would be weird,” but still expressed his enthusiasm for playing the character again.

Since the movie was released, Black has repeatedly said he’d love to make a sequel to Nacho Libre. He’s mentioned that White had an idea for a follow-up where Nacho travels to Japan. This would be a funny way to combine the worlds of Mexican lucha libre and Japanese sumo wrestling, and it would move away from the original film’s basis in the true story of Fray Tormenta, a Catholic priest who secretly wrestled.

Given how well the movie Nacho Libre did at the box office, many were surprised a sequel never happened. Over time, everyone involved moved on to different projects. Nickelodeon shifted its attention back to animated films, especially after The Last Airbender didn’t do as well as hoped. Meanwhile, the co-writer and director, Jared Hess, and actor Jack White focused on more mature content, notably the Emmy Award-winning series The White Lotus.

With all the recent changes happening behind the scenes at Paramount following the Skydance merger, a sequel to Nacho Libre might not be a top priority. However, it’s not impossible. Jack Black continues to have a good relationship with the studio thanks to the Kung Fu Panda movies, and his recent successful reunion with director Jared Hess on The Minecraft Movie – which is already getting a sequel – could make Paramount consider working with them again on another project.
