These shows really set the standard for crime dramas, and surprisingly, many of them still feel fresh and engaging even compared to today’s shows. The 2000s offered a wide variety of options, from gritty and intense mysteries to more playful and charming stories. Despite the constant release of new crime shows, there’s a unique quality to this era’s programs that hasn’t been replicated.

Vic Mackey, played by Michael Chiklis, was a groundbreaking TV character. Unlike most police protagonists, he was flawed, unpredictable, and willing to bend the rules to get the job done. Besides the change of location, CSI: Miami is a typical crime show: a dedicated team of investigators work together to solve the city’s crimes. What really sets it apart is its over-the-top style, particularly those iconic sunglasses scenes that everyone remembers!

It’s certainly well-made and captivating, but the format feels familiar, preventing it from ranking higher. It did, however, win two Primetime Emmy Awards.

Monk (2002 – 2009), 8 Seasons

If you enjoy the familiar trope of the eccentric detective, you’ll love this show. Adrian Monk, played by Tony Shalhoub, was a brilliant homicide detective until his wife’s unsolved murder triggered severe obsessive-compulsive disorder, costing him his job. Psych (2006 – 2014), 8 Seasons

I really love Psych! It’s a fun take on those usually serious crime shows, like Monk. But what makes Psych even better, for me, is this really clever twist: the main character pretends to be psychic while solving crimes. It adds a whole other layer of intrigue – he’s not just figuring out who did it, but constantly trying to maintain the illusion that he has special powers!

This job is already incredibly demanding, and having to prove your supernatural powers to the police adds a whole new level of pressure. It’s both draining and fascinating to see how it all plays out.

Shawn Spencer (James Roday Rodriguez) is incredibly observant, but that’s not always enough to solve the case. He often has to face the fallout from his own choices, and the show’s lighthearted humor offers a welcome break from the seriousness of many other crime dramas.

Although Psych didn’t win many major awards, it has a very dedicated following, and the show’s popularity led to three movies – with a fourth one possibly in development.
