Don’t miss Goodnight Mister Tom tonight! This classic British drama, featuring John Thaw and Nick Robinson, is a moving story with fantastic acting – ideal for a cozy Boxing Day watch.
This TV movie is adapted from Michelle Magorian’s 1981 novel and takes place during World War II. It tells the story of young William, nicknamed Willie Beech, who is sent away from London as part of the evacuation effort.
After these events, he’s sent to live in the village of Little Weirwold with Tom Oakley (Thaw). At first, they’re both a little unsure, but they quickly become close. However, Willie still struggles with difficult memories from his past life in London.

Despite limited critical attention, this TV movie has been very popular with viewers, earning an average rating of 7.8 out of 10 from over 5,500 IMDb reviews.

Another viewer strongly agreed, calling Goodnight Mister Tom an “absolute masterpiece” and saying it’s quickly become one of their all-time favorite films. They urged everyone to see it, describing it as simply “too good to miss!”
John Thaw gives a wonderful performance as Mister Tom, a gruff old man who unexpectedly becomes a loving father figure when young William Beech (Nick Robinson) is evacuated to live with him – it’s a bit like the contrast between city and country life. The film is genuinely moving and heartbreaking.

One viewer highlighted the heartwarming connection between Tom and young Willie as the core of the story. They described watching the bond grow between the evacuated boy and the initially grumpy old man as ‘touching and beautiful’.
So, alongside Thaw and Robinson, the show’s got Annabelle Apsion, Pauline Turner, and Geoffrey Beevers in the cast – a pretty solid lineup! Brian Finch did the script adaptation, and Jack Gold was the director, which is awesome. I’m really excited to see how they bring the story to life.
