Stranger Things S5 Volume 2 Ending & Series Finale Setup Explained

Be warned, this contains spoilers for the second part of Stranger Things season 5! The latest episodes pick up right where the first part left off. The ending of “Sorcerer” showed that Will has powers connected to Vecna and a sort of shared consciousness, but that alone won’t be enough to defeat the main villain. Although Will’s abilities could be very important, many characters are still trapped in the Upside Down, and the rest of the group is trying to gather information and come up with a plan.

The first part of Stranger Things season 5 brought back Kali, and the second part shows her escaping the military base in the Upside Down with Eleven and Hopper. Meanwhile, Nancy’s group is still searching for answers at Hawkins Lab, trying to understand the wall that surrounds the Upside Down. What they find will completely change our understanding of the Upside Down and the show’s other dimensions.

Max manages to return to her body and the real world, but her situation is still precarious. Meanwhile, Holly briefly escapes Vecna’s mental prison, only to wake up trapped in his hideout. Vecna quickly recaptures her, setting the stage for the final part of his plan.

How Vecna Is Planning To Merge The Two Different Worlds

Season 5 of Stranger Things has already hinted at Vecna’s plans for the kids – exploiting those with vulnerable minds to control them and “reshape the world.” The second part of the season clarifies how Vecna intends to take over, revealing his plan connects both our world and another dimension. According to Will, Vecna uses the people he controls to boost his powers, and he’s currently doing this on a larger scale with the group he captured earlier in the season.

Vecna has captured the children, including Holly, and is keeping them in his hideout, a terrifying place in another dimension that Dustin calls “the Abyss.” This is the same dimension where Henry was sent after Eleven defeated him at Hawkins Lab. Dustin explains that their world and the Abyss are linked by a gateway – that gateway is what we know as the Upside Down. Vecna is trying to combine both worlds by opening up tears and connections between them.

With both worlds growing unstable, they’re on track to crash into each other, which Eleven explains will allow Vecna to rebuild everything in his image. For a long time, the characters in Stranger Things believed the biggest threats came from the Upside Down, but it turns out that dimension was just a gateway for creatures from a deeper, more dangerous place – the Abyss – to reach Hawkins and our world.

What The Upside Down Being A Wormhole Means For Stranger Things

In the final episodes of Stranger Things season 5, Dustin figures out what the Upside Down really is. It’s essentially a wormhole—a connection between Hawkins and another dimension called the Abyss. Dustin explains that this wormhole is “held together by exotic matter.”

Demogorgons, the Mind Flayer, and all the other monsters from the Upside Down originally come from a place called the Abyss. When Eleven connected with Henry and helped Dr. Brenner find him, she unintentionally opened a gateway, which eventually became known as the Upside Down.

When Nancy fires at the strange substance, the resulting shockwave damages the wormhole, creating a hole in its wall. Because the wormhole acts as a bridge, anything pulled through this opening is lost completely. To defeat Vecna and foil his plans, the group must destroy this already fragile bridge.

The Party’s Plan To Defeat Vecna & Rescue Holly Explained

It turns out Steve is the mastermind behind the plan to reach the Abyss and confront Vecna. He suggests waiting until the worlds align – specifically, when their radio tower breaches the rift into the Abyss. Then, Eleven might be able to use her powers to enter Vecna’s mind while they’re both in the Upside Down’s version of Hawkins Lab.

Max can help El navigate Vecna’s mental world, drawing on her own experiences there. Kali intends to use her abilities to join them, essentially riding along with her sister into Vecna’s mind. At the same time, the rest of the group will climb the tower into the Abyss to rescue Holly and the other children, then bring them back to safety through the bridge.

Just before the group prepares for their major operation, Dustin suggests one last addition to the plan: planting a bomb by the strange material in the Upside Down. He believes this will destroy the bridge connecting the two worlds, and hopefully wipe out the Abyss and everything within it. Luckily, Hopper already has a bomb on hand, but this makes their already dangerous mission even riskier.

Is Eleven Going To Sacrifice Herself In The Upside Down?

As expected, Eleven is central to the Party’s strategy. This is her last opportunity to defeat her “brother,” and even with Kali’s assistance, failure could be devastating. To get closer to Vecna and access his thoughts, El intends to use the sensory deprivation tank that remains in the Hawkins Lab within the Upside Down.

Eleven’s position is dangerously close to the heart of the conflict, as Hawkins Lab sits directly beneath the area the group intends to destroy. Kali believes that a lasting resolution won’t be possible until Eleven is no longer around. She fears that even if Vecna is defeated, the pattern of individuals with superpowers will continue as long as El lives, and suggests El remain behind when the others detonate the area.

In season 5 of Stranger Things, Kali reveals that Dr. Kay has continued Dr. Brenner’s work with Project Indigo. Dr. Kay is giving blood from Brenner’s past test subjects to pregnant women, hoping their children will develop powers similar to Henry’s. However, this would only work using Eleven’s blood. As long as Eleven is alive, programs like Project Indigo could potentially continue indefinitely. The season 5 finale leaves it uncertain whether Eleven will be willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to stop it.

How Will Can Help Beat Vecna

After almost five seasons, Stranger Things confirms that Will Byers is gay in a heartfelt scene where he comes out to his loved ones. He shares this truth not only for his own sake, but also because he believes it will weaken Vecna’s control over him. Vecna had shown Will a painful vision of a lonely future, suggesting he would isolate himself and end up alone if he remained closeted and felt like an outsider.

Once Will acknowledges that the Party still accepts him, he regains some control because he’s less afraid of Vecna exposing his secret. This leads him to believe he needs to join Eleven in the Upside Down, anticipating Vecna might also attack the real world. While the plan could succeed, Vecna could still use his connection to the hive mind to send creatures like Demogorgons after the group, meaning Will and his abilities will be crucial for their defense.

The latest episodes of Stranger Things reveal that Will Byers has the potential for incredible power by connecting to a collective consciousness. Volume 2 demonstrates he can actively use this power against Vecna, as seen when he saves Max and Holly. Ultimately, defeating Vecna permanently might require Will to work with both Eleven and Kali.

How Stranger Things Season 5, Volume 2 Sets Up The Series Finale

Now that Stranger Things season 5, Volume 2 is out, only one episode remains. The series will conclude with the final episode, largely centered around the group’s plan involving the bridge. The last scene of “The Bridge” showed Murray managing to get everyone through the rift and into the Upside Down, so the final episode will probably begin right where that left off.

The team will need to divide to complete the mission. Eleven, Will, and Kali are going to Hawkins Lab, while another group will head to the radio tower to access the Upside Down. A third group will likely focus on getting the bomb ready to destroy the bridge.

The Party’s plan to defeat Vecna, rescue the children, and close the gate feels solid, but things rarely go smoothly for them. Considering that no main characters have died yet in Stranger Things season 5, it’s likely we’ll see some significant losses in the final episode.

The final season of Stranger Things, split into two parts (Volumes 1 and 2), is now streaming on Netflix. The very last episode will arrive on December 31, 2025.
