8 Years Later, Jonathan Groff’s 2-Season Netflix Crime Thriller Is a Must-Binge

Jonathan Groff’s acclaimed crime thriller first appeared on Netflix almost ten years ago, and it’s still incredibly popular with fans of the genre today.

Many dedicated Netflix viewers probably know which intense crime drama we’re talking about. The show was a two-time Emmy nominee and its cancellation was a major surprise – especially since critics loved it, giving it a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Mindhunter Is Still A Binge-Worthy Crime Series – What It’s About

I truly believe Mindhunter is one of the best shows Netflix has ever made, and I always recommend it. If you’re new to the platform, you absolutely need to add it to your list! And if you’ve been a Netflix subscriber for a while, chances are you’ve already discovered how amazing it is, especially since the first season came out back in 2017.

As a total film and TV geek, I was hooked on Mindhunter from the start. It’s executive produced by David Fincher, which should tell you something about the quality! The show basically tells the true story of how the FBI started figuring out how serial killers think back in the late 70s. You follow these two FBI agents – Holden Ford, who’s really focused and disciplined, and Bill Tench, who’s a bit more of a gritty, seasoned guy – and a huge part of their job is actually talking to these killers, trying to get inside their heads.

Just like he did with House of Cards, David Fincher directed the initial episodes of Mindhunter, establishing its distinctive visual style—a style fans will recognize from his acclaimed films like The Social Network and Gone Girl. The series features portrayals of infamous serial killers, including Ed Kemper, Dennis Rader, Wayne Williams, and Charles Manson.

Jonathan Groff was already a successful actor before becoming internationally recognized for his leading role in Mindhunter, but many consider his performance as Holden Ford to be the best of his career. He first gained significant attention in 2013 by voicing Kristoff in Frozen, and then again in 2015 as King George III in the original Broadway production of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton.

Holt McCallany delivers a compelling performance as Holden Ford, a character who is incredibly skilled at his job but struggles socially. While seemingly ordinary, Holden is instantly likable thanks to his genuine enthusiasm and dedication, which draws the audience into the show. The dynamic between his character and Bill Tench, played by Jonathan Groff, and later Dr. Wendy Carr (Anna Torv), is a standout element of the series.

6 Years Later, Mindhunter Is Still One Of Netflix’s Best Original Shows

The series Mindhunter first appeared on Netflix in 2017. While it wasn’t formally cancelled, Netflix put the show on indefinite hold in 2020 after the release of its second season in 2019. Director David Fincher has worked on other successful Netflix projects, including Love, Death & Robots and the film Mank, but there’s been almost no news about a third season of Mindhunter in the last six years.

Earlier this year, McCallany hinted that David Fincher is considering continuing the story of Mindhunter with a series of three movies. This news could be especially welcome for fans still hoping for a continuation after Fincher’s American adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo didn’t receive the sequel it was expected to get.

No matter what happens with future content, Netflix subscribers will always be able to enjoy the two seasons of Mindhunter. It’s considered one of the platform’s best original series and is unlikely to be removed.
